Soccer-Croatia name Cacic as new coach

ZAGREB, Sept 21 (Reuters) – Croatia have named Ante Cacic as their new coach in the wake of the sacking of Niko Kovac earlier this month.

"Cacic has been signed unanimously on a three-year contract after extensive deliberations within the Croatian Football Association's (HNS) executive board," the body's president Davor Suker told a news conference on Monday.

"We are confident that we have a appointed a coach who will take Croatia to the European Championship finals."

Soccer-Dinamo celebrate impressive 2-1 win over Arsenal

ZAGREB, Sept 16 (Reuters) – Croatian title winners Dinamo Zagreb made a dream start to their Champions League campaign after a goal in each half gave them a 2-1 home win over 10-man Arsenal in their Group F match on Wednesday.

An Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain own goal followed by a Junior Fernandes header put Dinamo in the driving seat before Theo Walcott pulled one back for the Premier League side, who had striker Olivier Giroud sent off in the first half.

Having failed to advance past the group stage of Europe's elite club competition in their previous four attempts, Dinamo produced a morale-boosting performance in the Maksimir stadium.

SARAJEVO, Aug 22 (Reuters) – A Bosnian league match between Celik Zenica & Sarajevo was assist up for 20 minutes after fans clashed with riot police & committed racist offences on Saturday.

Video footage showed visiting Sarajevo fans fighting with police early in the second half, forcing officials to escort the players into the tunnel & briefly suspend play.

Bosnian media said the home supporters directed monkey chants at Sarajevo's Nigerian forward Harmony Ikande, adding that rival fans had hurled flares at each other before the interruption.

ZAGREB, July 23 (Reuters) – Croatia have been deducted one Euro 2016 qualifying point, ordered to play two matches behind closed doors & fined after a swastika was imprinted on the pitch before their qualifier against Italy in Split last month.

The Slovenian upstarts, destroyed 6-0 by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge two weeks ago, took the lead in the 50th minute when Macedonia winger Agim Ibraimi curled in a spectacular left-foot shot from the corner of the box.

Maribor had a tremendous chance to make it 2-0 on the hour when the unmarked Luka Zahovic blazed the ball over the bar from six metres with an open goal at his mercy.
