What next for Tiger after a season of struggle?

By Mark Lamport-Stokes

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – What next for Tiger Woods? This is a tantalizing question on the lips of many, including the former world number one himself as he puts his golf clubs away for a while after enduring a dismal PGA Tour campaign.

Now ranked a mind-blowing 257th after mainly struggling over the past two years, Woods missed four cuts — three of them in the majors — while recording just one top-10 in 11 starts on his 2014-15 schedule.

Compton ends season early at Barclays

EDISON, N.J. (AP) — Erik Compton ended his season Thursday when he withdrew from The Barclays after eighth hole with a respiratory infection.

Compton, who already has gone through two heart transplants, was No. 122 in the FedEx Cup & would have needed a strong week to move into the top 100 & advance to the next playoff event at the TPC Boston.

Last week at the Wyndham Championship, the 35-year-old Compton opened with a career-low 62 yet had to withdraw before the third round because of gout. He spent last week at home in Miami & developed a respiratory infection, & didn't decide to show up in New Jersey until Wednesday night to donate it a shot.

Mahan begins long road in the playoffs, with history on side

Mahan begins long road in the playoffs, with history on side

EDISON, N.J. (AP) — Recent history is what gives Hunter Mahan a level of optimism he would not ordinarily have at The Barclays.

For the first time in 10 years, he is at risk of ending a PGA Tour season without once finishing in the top three. For the first time in more than six years, Mahan is out of the top 50 in the world ranking. He starts the FedEx Cup playoffs at No. 71, his lowest position since this series began in 2007.

Mahan is the only player to have never missed a playoff event. That streak is in jeopardy.

Golf-Woods' best outing in years not satisfactory enough to snap skid

By Andrew Both

GREENSBORO, North Carolina, Aug 23 (Reuters) – Tiger Woods had his best tournament in nearly two years yet it was still not enough to snap a years-long winless streak on the PGA Tour as he missed a number of birdie opportunities at the Wyndham Championship on Sunday.

Woods started the day two strokes from the lead yet did not make a birdie until the ninth hole at Sedgefield. He was three strokes behind by then & a triple-bogey at the par-four 11th totally ended his chances.
