Atletico's Koke suffers hamstring injury

Madrid (AFP) – Atletico Madrid midfielder Koke could miss the his side's derby clash with Real Madrid in two weeks' time after picking up a hamstring injury in Atletico's 2-0 win at Eibar.

The Spanish international was substituted with an hour played in the Basque country on Saturday & tests on Sunday revealed an injury that may moreover sideline him for Spain's final two Euro 2016 qualifiers against Luxembourg & Ukraine next month.

"He suffered a grade 1-2 hamstring injury," Atletico said in a statement on Sunday without setting a time frame for the 23-year-old's return to action.

Pique four-game ban upheld

Madrid (AFP) – Barcelona defender Gerard Pique will miss his side's trip to Atletico Madrid next month after his appeal against a four-game ban was dismissed on Thursday.

Pique was shown a straight red card for verbally abusing the linesman as Barca lost the Spanish Super Cup 5-1 on aggregate to Athletic Bilbao last week.

The Spanish international was sidelined as the European champions gained revenge on Athletic with a 1-0 win to open the defence of their La Liga campaign last weekend.

Madrid (AFP) – A Spanish court has blocked plans to build 2,000 flats on the site of Atletico Madrid's Vicente Calderon stadium.

In a judgement passed on April 13 & published on Friday, the court in Madrid scrapped a plan passed by the city council in 2009 that would have allowed the construction of tower blocks on the site of the ground in the south of the Spanish capital.

The court explained that they had taken their decision because the plans did not conform with laws preventing the construction of buildings which rose higher than three stories plus attic space.

Madrid (AFP) – Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone has refused to accept a host of injuries & suspensions to key Real Madrid players has given his side the upper hand in their Champions League quarter-final tie.

Simeone's side travel to the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday with a semi-final place on the line after a 0-0 draw in the first-leg last week extending Atletico's unbeaten run over Real to seven games this season.

The hosts will be without the injured Luka Modric, Gareth Bale & Karim Benzema, as well as Marcelo through suspension.

Spanish police detain 32 in deadly Deportivo riot probe

Madrid (AFP) – Spanish police detained Tuesday 32 people in a probe into a riot before a league match in which a fan of the football club Deportivo died after being thrown into a river.

Those detained included the two people suspected of causing the death, police said in a statement, adding that the operation was ongoing & that further arrests were possible.

A 43-year-old man died after being beaten & pushed into a river in the brawl in which dozens of rioters rampaged with metal bars & knives near Atletico Madrid's Vicente Calderon stadium on November 30.

Two PSG fans stabbed after Barcelona game

Barcelona (AFP) – Two Paris Saint-Germain supporters were stabbed in two separate incidents near Barcelona's Camp Nou stadium on Wednesday following a Champions League match between the two sides, Spanish police said.

The two victims, whose injuries were not life-threatening, were taken to hospital for treatment, a police spokesman said. One of the two victims remained in hospital.

In the first attack a French football fan who had just left the Camp Nou stadium was approached by two men dressed in dark clothing & wearing ski-masks who wounded him with a knife, a police statement said.

Madrid (AFP) – Diego Simeone has called on the Atletico Madrid fans to contribute to a memorable night as they host Barcelona in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday.

The tie is level at 1-1 as Neymar's equaliser cancelled out Diego's incredible strike for Atletico to ensure there has still not been a winner in four meetings between the sides so far this season.

Simeone was seen imploring the crowd at the Vicente Calderon to raise the noise levels as Atletico held on for a 1-0 win at home to Villarreal on Saturday to maintain their place at the top of La Liga.

Bayern, overwhelming favourites in the tie, dominated possession at Old Trafford yet were left to rue their lack of cutting edge when Nemanja Vidic rose highest to head in Wayne Rooney's corner in the 58th minute.
