Bottles thrown at Lokomotiv team bus in Turkey

ISTANBUL (AP) — Bottles were thrown at Lokomotiv Moscow's team bus & a Russian player sparked controversy on the pitch with a picture of Vladimir Putin on his vest in a politically-charged game against Turkish side Fenerbahce on Tuesday.

Turkish police detained three people after bottles were thrown as the bus headed for the Europa League match in Istanbul's Sukru Saracoglu Stadium.

Police said the three people were drunk & that one of the bus' windows was slightly cracked.

BERLIN, Sept 18 (Reuters) – Mainz 05's Yunus Malli grabbed his first Bundesliga hat-trick as they moved up to third with a 3-1 home win over Hoffenheim on Friday, the former Germany youth international taking his tally to five in their last three games.

The 23-year-old midfielder, who has now scored 11 league goals in this calendar year, struck twice after Hoffenheim took a 13th minute lead, first with a quick move in the box in the 18th & then with a superb shot into the top corner just after the hour mark.

The speedy German-Turkish playmaker, who is already a target for Turkey's national team, completed his hat-trick in the 68th minute after seeing his first close-range effort saved before drilling in the rebound.

Videos of the man & child falling after the journalist stuck out her leg as he ran past went viral on media last week, sparking outrage internationally.

BERLIN, Sept 16 (Reuters) – Germany would have no problems hosting both the 2024 European soccer championships as well as the summer Olympics in the same year, given the country's sports infrastructure & organisational skills, International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach said on Wednesday.

Hamburg is bidding for the 2024 Olympics while the German football association (DFB) is hoping to land the Euro in the same year, traditionally staged just a few weeks before the summer Games.

"I think this can be possible because they are time-wise a couple of weeks apart from each other so they do not influence each other in this respect," Bach said in a conference call.

Prosecutors request acquittal in Turkey football fans 'coup' trial

Istanbul (AFP) – Turkish prosecutors on Friday asked for the mass acquittal of 35 football fans of the Istanbul club Besiktas who had been put on trial on widely-ridiculed charges of seeking to stage a coup in 2013 protests.

Fans from Besiktas's main fan group Carsi had played a leading role in May-June 2013 protests against then prime minister now President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

They had been charged with seeking to overthrow Erdogan's government in a coup & forming a criminal gang, with the trial starting on December 17.

Italy will now play Serbia for first place in the tough Group B. Serbia stayed unbeaten by defeating Turkey 91-72 earlier Wednesday.

Guard Milos Teodosic had 17 points & 13 assists, as Serbia stayed perfect with a 4-0 record, while Turkey fell to 2-2. Italy is 3-1, while Germany is 1-3.

Dennis Schroeder, who scored 14 of his game-high 24 points in the fourth quarter, brought Germany within seven in the final quarter yet Turkey held on for a victory that improves its chances of advancing to the knockout stage. Turkey is now 2-1, while Germany fell to 1-2 in the tough Group B.

After losses to Turkey & Iceland over the last few days, the Dutch are on the brink of missing out on next year's European Championship in France – a tournament expanded to accommodate 24 teams.

The Netherlands lineup that lost to Iceland 1-0 at home on Thursday & then 3-0 at Turkey on Sunday is virtually unchanged from the one that overwhelmingly defeated the defending World Cup champions 5-1 last year in Brazil & ended up finishing third.
