DENVER (AP) — Starling Marte homered among his four hits & came within a triple of the cycle, & the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Colorado Rockies 9-3 on Monday night.

Aramis Ramirez went deep & Jody Mercer had four hits for the Pirates, who reduced their magic number for clinching a postseason berth to two. A win Tuesday & a San Francisco loss would clinch at least a wild card for the third straight season.

Marte homered in Pittsburgh's two-run first, singled in the fourth & doubled off the top of the wall in the sixth. He led off the ninth with a single to center.

The Cardinals moved six games ahead of Chicago in the NL Central. The Pirates were still playing Sunday & are 4 1/2 back of St. Louis.

Molina was injured tagging out Anthony Rizzo on a sacrifice-fly attempt in the eighth. Right fielder Jason Heyward had the assist, throwing out Rizzo on Addison Russell's no-out, bases-loaded fly.

Pittsburgh climbed within four games of NL Central-leading St. Louis following the Cardinals' 5-4 loss at Chicago. The Pirates remained a game ahead of the Cubs in the race for the first wild card, with both teams comfortably in playoff position.

Despite the Dodgers' sixth loss in 24 games, their magic number for clinching their third straight NL West title dropped to seven because the San Francisco Giants lost 6-0 to Arizona.

Mike Trout & Chris Iannetta added solo homers for Los Angeles (76-72), which won its third straight in the series & pulled a game ahead of Minnesota (75-73) in the AL wild-card race.

Entering the nightcap, the two teams trailed Houston by 1 1/2 games for the second wild card. Houston hosted Oakland on Saturday.

Shin Soo-Choo matched his career high with four hits, scored twice & drove in two runs for the Rangers (79-67), who entered the series trailing Houston by 1 1/2 games.

Texas now leads the division by 2 1/2 games with 16 remaining, including three at Houston from Sept. 25-27.
