Stadler finishes long day in the lead at Barclays

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) — It took Kevin Stadler nearly 11 hours to open with a 7-under 64 at Liberty National. And he’s not even guaranteed to be the first-round leader at The Barclays.

Two rain delays that lasted a total of six hours put a damper on the start of the FedEx Cup playoffs.

Stadler teed off just after breakfast & finished his round right before dinner. Only half the field finished. Stadler had a one-shot lead over Henrik Stenson, Ryan Palmer & Camilo Villegas.

McIlroy hopes for a late start to his season

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) — Rory McIlroy knew the rules going into last year’s FedEx Cup playoffs, which didn’t make it any easier to digest.

He won the Deutsche Bank Championship after a duel with Louis Oosthuizen. The next week at Crooked Stick, he blew away a powerful leaderboard that featured Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Lee Westwood, Dustin Johnson & Adam Scott to win the BMW Championship. He closed out his tremendous run with a tie for 10th at the Tour Championship.

All that received him was second place in the FedEx Cup (along with a $3 million bonus).

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) — Ben Crane was lucky to obtain into the FedEx Cup playoffs as the No. 125 seed. He missed the cut last week at the Wyndham Championship, & this was the first year that no one moved into the top 125 in the final event before the playoffs.

For Woods, still some work to do this year

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) — The end of the major championships is not the end of the world for Tiger Woods.

And there’s still plenty up for grabs for Phil Mickelson, who has an outside shot at winning his first Player of the Year. Or even for Rory McIlroy, who feels as if he is coming off a six-month vacation & is trying to win for the first time this year.

The Barclays starts Thursday across the Hudson River from Manhattan. It’s the first of four FedEx Cup playoff events that feature some of the strongest fields of the year.

Liberty National has face-lift since last Barclays

By Larry Fine

JERSEY CITY, New Jersey (Reuters) – Liberty National burst into prominence as a golf venue with its tremendous looks at New York harbor, the Statue of Liberty & the Manhattan skyline yet it took a face-lift to smooth some rough edges for The Barclays.

Liberty National, built on reclaimed landfill on the banks of New York harbor, had its high-profile “coming out party” in hosting The Barclays in 2009 yet the long, narrow layout designed by Tom Kite & Bob Cupp was not universally embraced.
