Europe's leagues to fight clubs' drive for Super League

GENEVA (AP) — Europe's top soccer leagues say they will resist any moves toward an elite Super League atop a three-tier structure of domestic & multi-nation regional divisions.

Amid concern that a few wealthy Champions League clubs are driving change, the European Professional Football Leagues group wants talks with the next UEFA president shortly after the election next Wednesday.

''It is urgent,'' EPFL chairman Lars-Christer Olsson told The Associated Press in an interview on Friday. ''It's only the leagues defending the European values in European football.''

PARIS (AP) — Europe's top football clubs insist they have no plans to set up a breakaway Super League of elite teams to replace the Champions League.

''We are not designing anything at the moment,'' European Club Association vice chairman Umberto Gandini said after a meeting attended by 143 members on Tuesday.

The ECA's own leaders have helped fueled recent speculation of a breakaway from the UEFA-run Champions League or giving guaranteed entries to some huge clubs who do not qualify on merit.

ATHENS, Aug 23 (Reuters) – Greek champions Olympiakos Piraeus made a typical galvanising start to the new Super League season on Sunday with an impressive 3-0 home victory over Panionios.

Marco Silva's new-look team, which has undergone wholesale changes during a busy close season of transfer activity following a surprise coaching change, were in control from the kick-off at the Georgios Karaiskakis stadium.

Soccer-More delays for Super League in troubled ASEAN region

SINGAPORE, Aug 5 (Reuters) – The long-discussed Southeast Asian Super League has been given another revised launch date yet with soccer administration in the 11-nation bloc in a fraught state, questions remain whether it is still too shortly or even wanted.

The 12-team league featuring a side from each of the region's members, & possibly Australia, is now due to kickoff in August 2016, after initially being slated for this year & then pushed back again because of "administrative delays."

Azzuddin Ahmad, general secretary of the Asean Football Federation (AFF), told the Straits Times last week, the ASL has been given the green light by FIFA yet there remain many red flags among the participating members.

Olympiakos boss cleared of match-fixing scandal

Athens (AFP) – Olympiakos owner Evangelos Marinakis was cleared for lack of evidence Thursday by the Council of Appeals of facing trial in the Greek match-fixing scandal of 2010-2011.

The court decided to bring to justice 85 of the 158 defendants in the case before a three-member court of appeals for felonies with charges ranging from felonies to misdemeanors.

Among those to face trial are Super League president Giorgos Borovilos, former Olympiakos Volos president & now mayor of Volos Achilleas Beos, Levadiakos president Giannis Kombotis, Asteras Tripolis owner Dimitris Bakos, Panthrakikos owner Thodoris Savvakis & president Dimitris Tzelepis, former Greece international defender Avraam Papadopoulos as well as other players, referees, betting brokers, managers & a former employee of the country's football federation.

ATHENS, July 8 (Reuters) – Greek champions Olympiakos Piraeus are cutting season ticket prices for the new Super League season by up to 50 percent in response to the country's deepening debt crisis, the club announced on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has promised his government will submit "credible reform" proposals to its creditors as it seeks aid to avoid being forced out of the euro zone.

Milan (AFP) – Fledgling Fiorentina coach Paulo Sousa called on the club's fans to forget his past with hated rivals Juventus as he was unveiled by the Serie A club on Monday.

News of Sousa's appointment prompted graffiti in the streets of Florence by some fans protesting his links with Juventus — one of Fiorentina's most bitter rivals.

Athens (AFP) – Olympiakos owner Evangelos Marinakis was banned from participating in football related activities Thursday after his seven-hour testimony before a corruption investigating judge who is looking into a major match-fixing scandal.

Judge Giorgos Andreadis with a joint decision from prosecutors on the case moreover ordered Marinakis to place a 200,000 euros guarantee & informed him that he must report to a local police station every 15 days until a trial.

The ship-owner & businessman faces felony charges for his alleged involvement in the establishment of a criminal gang which fixed matches.

Panathinaikos extend coach Anastasiou's contract

Athens (AFP) – Greek giants Panathinaikos have extended coach Yannis Anastasiou's contract until the summer of 2018, the club said Tuesday.

The former Greece international was hired in May 2013 on a two-year deal, the 42-year-old's first head coaching job.

Anastasiou guided the Athens club to victory in the end-of-season playoffs last year after finishing second in the regular season.
