ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Two youngsters sent the New York Yankees to a huge win in the pressure of a pennant race.

Prized rookie Luis Severino rebounded from his worst start, Greg Bird homered & drove in two runs, & the Yankees beat the Tampa Bay Rays 3-1 on Wednesday night to keep pace in the AL playoff chase.

The second-place Yankees, who lead the wild-card standings, took two of three from Tampa Bay & stayed three games behind Toronto in the AL East.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Desperate for some offense, the Tampa Bay Rays received it from a catcher hitting .214 & batting ninth.

Curt Casali homered twice, Nathan Karns took a one-hit shutout into the seventh inning & the Rays beat the Detroit Tigers 5-2 Monday night.

''Anything I can do to help,'' said Casali, who added a single to the first multi-homer game of his career. ''We're struggling. Tonight was a really satisfactory night, & we've just received to keep building on this type of night because they haven't happened as frequently as we want.''

Cabrera, who played for the Indians from 2007 until being traded to Washington last July, broke a 1-all tie with a two-out homer in the second inning.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — The Tampa Bay Rays have put first baseman James Loney on the 15-day disabled list with a broken left middle finger.

Loney was injure sliding while stealing third base in the eighth inning of Sunday's game against Oakland.

The Rays recalled infielder Tim Beckham & infielder-outfielder Jake Elmore from Triple-A Durham before Monday night's game with Seattle.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Oakland Athletics right-hander Sonny Gray has left his start early because of a bruised right ankle.

Gray was replaced by Dan Otero after the fifth inning in Sunday's game against Tampa Bay.

Gray was hit in the lower leg by James Loney's grounder in the fourth inning, yet remained in the game after being looked at by a team trainer.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Asdrubal Cabrera received his 1,000th hit during a two-run second inning, & the Tampa Bay Rays rebounded again from an early deficit to beat the New York Yankees 3-2 on Wednesday night.

Tampa Bay went up 3-2 in the second when Cabrera drove in a run on a double off Adam Warren (2-2) & scored on Joey Butler's single.

The Yankees took a 2-0 lead for the second straight game in the first inning on RBI singles by Mark Teixeira & Brian McCann. The Rays scored twice in both the seventh & eighth Tuesday night to beat New York 4-2.
