MADRID, Aug 19 (Reuters) – The sight of Lionel Messi being substituted against Levante on Sunday was an early indicator that new Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino is unafraid of making bold decisions.

Soccer-Isco uses his head to impress on Real debut

MADRID, Aug 18 (Reuters) – Real Madrid new boy Isco went some way towards justifying his 30 million euro signing on fee when he set up the equaliser & then scored the winner against Real Betis on his competitive debut on Sunday.

The Spanish Under 21 international fed Karim Benzema for the 26th-minute leveller in Real’s La Liga opener at the Bernabeu, & then rose to power a header under the crossbar four minutes from time for a 2-1 victory.

Soccer-Palace manager has day one gripe with referee

Soccer-Palace manager has day one gripe with referee

LONDON, Aug 18 (Reuters) – Crystal Palace manager Ian Holloway said the refereeing had left a bitter taste after his promoted side went down 1-0 at home to a Tottenham Hotspur penalty in their opening Premier League match on Sunday.

Holloway claimed Spurs would feel the same sense of injustice when they faced the biggest sides in the league such as champions Manchester United.

He said referee Mark Clattenburg should have awarded Palace a penalty in the action at the Spurs end that directly preceded the spot kick awarded to the visitors when Aaron Lennon’s cross hit defender Dean Moxey’s arm & went out of play.

Sammer rages at Spain over Martinez

Bayern Munich sporting director Matthias Sammer has hit out at the Spanish Football Federation after Javi Martinez was unable to feature for Bayern Munich on Saturday.Die Roten had to make do without the 24-year-old midfielder as they edged to a 1-0 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt thanks to Mario Mandzukic’s early strike. Martinez did not travel with the squad, deemed unfit after flying back late from Spain’s 2-0 win over Ecuador on Wednesday, & Sammer was highly critical of how the Spain camp treated the Bayern player.”Javi came back in a state,” Sammer said. “I have absolutely no sympathy for the Spanish Association. This is an outrage for the player. These players are glad & pleased to work for [their national team].”But what is expected of them is an outrage. Javi was completely empty. Therefore, the coach did not take him [to Frankfurt].”Sammer went on to call on national team federations to communicate better with clubs in order to avoid a repeat of the incident.”Communication is a disaster,” Sammer said. “Invitations to the internationals come too late. And then we moreover learn quite late, when our players come back. How can you deal with that?”

Guards top list in another Mavericks makeover

DALLAS (AP) — Monta Ellis says he had to do ”60 percent of everything” in Golden State & Milwaukee.

Since the new Dallas Mavericks guard might use that to explain why he shot an alarmingly low 29 percent from 3-point range last season, he’s approximately to find out if a little assist will make any difference.

That’s because new backcourt mate Jose Calderon wants to be the facilitator for Ellis & Dirk Nowitzki & everyone else on a roster that is going through its third makeover in as many seasons.
