US beats Spain 82-76 in men's basketball, will play for gold

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Gone was the all-offense, all-action play that turned the last two gold-medal games into classics.

To obtain by Spain again, the U.S. Olympic men's basketball team would have to win ugly, so unusual it's practically un-American.

''It was just a real different game today,'' coach Mike Krzyzewski said.

Spain 0-2 in men's basketball, face 'challenging' road ahead

Spain 0-2 in men's basketball, face 'challenging' road ahead

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Two losses in two games by a total of three points have the Spanish men's basketball team in an unenviable, yet somewhat familiar position.

Spain dropped to 0-2 after Tuesday's 66-65 loss to Brazil, yet there's still a level of optimism in the locker room.

The disappointing start to the Rio Games – losing twice before the medial round – is reminiscent of the London Games. The Spaniards started better in 2012, then lost twice only to rebound & capture the silver.

Croatia upsets Spain 72-70 as Saric blocks Gasol's last shot

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Dario Saric blocked Pau Gasol's shot just before time expired, preserving Croatia's 72-70 upset of Spain in an Olympic men's basketball Sunday night.

Croatia scored seven straight points to take the lead down the stretch, then held on when Saric, who was still limping a bit after banging his leg on a pick shortly before the play, rose high to block Gasol's shot under the basket.

Bojan Bogdanovic of the Brooklyn Nets scored 23 points for the Croatians, who received the tiebreaking basket from Krunoslav Simon with approximately 1 1/2 minutes left. Saric, the former lottery pick bound for the Philadelphia 76ers, have five points, seven rebounds & five assists.
