SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — For the first time in seven years, there was a new coach at the front of the room when the San Jose Sharks opened training camp.

Coach Peter DeBoer held his first practice Friday since taking over for Todd McLellan following last season. DeBoer is tasked with getting the Sharks back into the playoffs & contention for that elusive Stanley Cup after San Jose missed the postseason for the first time since 2003.

DeBoer brings a new voice & some tweaks to how the team plays yet said there is no need for wholesale changes for a team that for years was one of the best in the regular season only to fall short in the playoffs.

Coyotes sign rugged forward Scott to 1-year contract

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Coyotes have signed veteran forward John Scott to a one-year contract.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The 32-year-old Scott had three goals & an assist in 38 games with the San Jose Sharks last season. He has five goals & five assists in seven NHL seasons with stops in Minnesota, Chicago, the New York Rangers, Buffalo & San Jose.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Longtime San Jose Sharks executive Wayne Thomas is retiring after 22 years in the organization.

The 67-year-old Thomas announced his decision to step down as vice president & assistant general manager on Thursday. He says he wants to spend more time with his family.

Thomas spent 45 years in hockey as a player, coach, scout & executive. He played goalie for nine years in the NHL for Montreal, Toronto & the New York Rangers. The Canadiens won the Stanley Cup his rookie year in 1972-73.

Sharks sign D Paul Martin to open free agency

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — After missing the playoffs for the first time since 2003, the San Jose Sharks went into the offseason with a clear focus on becoming tougher defensively.

A day after acquiring Martin Jones to be their new starting goaltender, the Sharks opened free agency Wednesday by finding the veteran defenseman they sought when they signed Paul Martin to a $19.4 million, four-year contract.

''We feel satisfactory we received these two pieces off our checklist,'' general manager Doug Wilson said. ''Now it allows us to look at some other things & explore. But we don't feel like there's any rush. These two pieces needed to be addressed. They have been & we'll go forward from here.''

Stars acquire rights to champion goalie Niemi from Sharks

DALLAS (AP) — The Dallas Stars have acquired the rights to former Stanley Cup champion goalie Antti Niemi from the San Jose Sharks.

Dallas sent San Jose its seventh-round selection (193th overall) in Saturday's draft. Niemi is set to become an unrestricted free agent Wednesday.

Niemi won all 16 postseason games for Chicago in 2010 when the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup title. He went to San Jose as a free agent after that season.

Sharks sign Finnish forward Joonas Donskoi

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — The San Jose Sharks have signed Finnish free agent forward Joonas (YOO-nus) Donskoi to an entry-level contract.

The team announced the signing Wednesday.

The 23-year-old Donskoi had 19 goals & 30 assists in 58 games for Karpat in Finland's top professional hockey league. He helped his team win the league championship & was voted as the playoff MVP.

Babcock declines comment after meeting with Sabres owner

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Mike Babcock's coaching interview tour took him to Buffalo on Sunday for a meeting with Sabres owner Terry Pegula.

The Detroit Red Wings coach declined comment to The Associated Press, & referred questions to Pegula when the two received out of an SUV at Buffalo-Niagara International Airport. Pegula said ''Hello,'' before making a remark on how much rain had fallen. The two then walked away & boarded a private jet.

Babcock flew to Buffalo earlier in the day & spent the afternoon meeting with Pegula & general manager Tim Murray at the Sabres' downtown arena. Babcock is still under contract with the Red Wings through June 30. The Red Wings are open to re-signing Babcock, yet have granted him permission to interview with other teams.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Todd McLellan is out after seven years as coach of the San Jose Sharks.

The team announced Monday that McLellan & the Sharks agreed to part ways after the team missed the playoffs for the first time since 2003. McLellan had one year remaining on his contract.

McLellan had a successful run with the Sharks despite the latest disappointing season & an inability for the team to obtain over the playoff hump & make the Stanley Cup for the first time in franchise history.
