Battle on for last automatic spots on U.S. Ryder Cup team

(Reuters) – With the Ryder Cup just over a month away, the teams are shaping up, with this week's Barclays tournament at Bethpage determining the last three automatic spots on a United States team desperate to end Europe's recent domination.

U.S. Open champion Dustin Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Phil Mickelson, PGA Championship winner Jimmy Walker & Ryder rookie Brooks Koepka are set for the trip to Hazeltine outside Minneapolis for the biennial matches starting on Sept. 30.

Eight players automatically qualify from the U.S. points list, creating a scramble for the last three on offer from candidates such as (number six) Brandt Snedeker, Zach Johnson, Patrick Reed, Bubba Watson, Olympic bronze medallist Matt Kuchar & Rickie Fowler.

Golf: Knox knocking on Ryder Cup door after second win

Golf: Knox knocking on Ryder Cup door after second win

(Reuters) – Russell Knox sank a 12-foot par putt at the final hole to win the Travelers Championship in Connecticut by one shot on Sunday, moving the Scot into contention for a place on the European team at next month's Ryder Cup.

Knox is a dual British & United States citizen & although he carries two passports, the 31-year-old left no doubt where his loyalties lie after carding a 68 to complete at 14-under-par 266 at River Highlands in Cromwell.

"My dad was born in California so I have dual nationality. I'm not sure there's ever been someone in my position before yet I'm Scottish down to the core so I'll be on team Europe hopefully," the Inverness-born Knox told reporters.

Tiger is our Ryder Cup tactician, says U.S. captain Love

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Former world number one Tiger Woods is taking on the role of U.S. tactician for next month's Ryder Cup against holders Europe, says captain Davis Love III.

Fourteen-times major winner Woods has been sidelined for almost a year as he recovers from multiple back operations & seems to have spent much of his time away from the circuit thinking approximately how the Americans can regain the trophy.

"He's been texting me some pairings & some groupings," Love told Sky Sports television of one of his vice-captains. "He's put a lot of thought into it & he's kind of our tactician.

Olympics present problem in US qualifying for Ryder Cup

Olympics present problem in US qualifying for Ryder Cup

SPRINGFIELD, N.J. (AP) — The Olympics has thrown another wrinkle into the golf schedule, this one affecting the American team for the Ryder Cup.

The PGA Championship typically is the final event to earn one of the eight automatic qualifying spots, & then Davis Love III would have four captain's picks leading up to the Ryder Cup matches that start Sept. 30 at Hazeltine.

Because the PGA has been moved to the end of July ahead of the Olympics, qualifying for the Americans won't end until Aug. 28 after The Barclays.

Westwood keen to build on Masters showing in Ryder Cup year

Westwood keen to build on Masters showing in Ryder Cup year

(Reuters) – Former world number one Lee Westwood hopes his strong complete at last month's U.S. Masters proves to be the catalyst for the Briton to obtain back to his best, adding that poor form had led him to question his ability to compete at the top level.

The Briton only just qualified for the season's first major by virtue of a top-50 ranking yet his two-under total at Augusta was satisfactory enough to tie for second alongside Jordan Spieth, three shots behind compatriot Danny Willet.

It was a welcome return to form for Westwood, who is still searching for a first win since recording a third Indonesian Masters triumph in April 2015, with his poor results leaving him as low as 67th in the world rankings earlier this year.
