Bruins GM Chiarelli rewarded with extension

BOSTON (AP) — The Bruins have signed general manager Peter Chiarelli to a four-year contract extension through the 2017-18 season.

Chiarelli, who has built a team that has advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals two of the last three years, will moreover continue on as alternate governor on the NHL’s Board of Governors.

Next month, when training camp opens, Chiarelli, 49, will enter his eighth season with Boston. The Bruins have qualified for the playoffs in six of his first seven years, & won the Stanley Cup in 2011.

Chelsea has announced the signing of Anzhi forward Willian, who has completed his move to Stamford Bridge having been granted a work permit.The Brazilian, who had been expected to join Tottenham, has signed a five-year contract with Jose Mourinho’s side.A product of the Corinthians youth academy, the 25-year-old moved to Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk in August 2007 before moving to Russia in January following some eye-catching performances in the Champions League.”I’m very pleased to be here, it’s been a dream of mine to come & play here,” the player told the Blues’ official website upon completing his transfer to the Stamford Bridge outfit.”Chelsea are one of the best clubs in the world, & now I’m going to play for one of the best managers in the world, so I’m very pleased & looking forward to it.”Willian has not been named in the squad for Friday’s UEFA Super Cup encounter with Bayern Munich in Prague, & in turn will not have the opportunity to make his debut until after the international break, on September 14 against Everton.The Brazil international is believed to have cost Roman Abramovich’s side in the region of 30 million pounds.

ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) — The U.S. hockey team has flipped the script since the last Winter Olympics.

The Americans expect to be a favorite to win gold in six months at the Sochi Games after saying they were underdogs in 2010, when they won silver & were a goal away from knocking off the host Canadians.

”The only people that thought we had a chance were probably the guys in the locker room, or our coaches & management of USA Hockey,” Chicago Blackhawks star forward Patrick Kane said Monday. ”This time, it’s different.”

Soccer-Lokomotiv maul Rostov to go second in Russia

Aug 26 (Reuters) – Lokomotiv Moscow inflicted the first league defeat of the season on nine-man Rostov to go three places up to second after thumping the surprise package of Russia’s 16-team first division 5-0 at home on Monday.

The result lifted Lokomotiv above third-placed Rostov on goal difference & left both teams on 13 points from six games, one less than champions CSKA Moscow who beat Tom Tomsk 2-1 on Saturday.

Uzbek left back Vitaly Denisov set up three of the goals as Lokomotiv ran riot in the second half after Ecuador striker Felipe Caicedo headed them into a 44th-minute lead thanks to satisfactory work by livewire Morocco midfielder Mbark Boussoufa.

Cavs sign top pick Bennett to contract

CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cavaliers have signed Anthony Bennett, the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s draft, to his guaranteed rookie contract.

Financial terms were not immediately known, yet the deal can be worth up to $22.8 million over four years.

Bennett was somewhat of a surprising selection by the Cavaliers, who believe the 6-foot-8, 240-pounder from UNLV can play power forward. He’s recovering from shoulder surgery, yet the Toronto native is expected to be ready for the start of training camp. He averaged 16.1 points & 8.1 rebounds as a freshman with the Runnin’ Rebels.

Fish beats Donskoy in Winston-Salem Open 1st round

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — Mardy Fish beat Evgeny Donskoy 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 on Sunday night in the first round of the Winston-Salem Open.

Fish – a wild-card entrant – advances to face Jarkko Nieminen of Finland, the tournament’s 11th seed, in the second round.

The tournament – the men’s final tuneup event before the U.S. Open – began Sunday with a handful of first-round matches. Yen-hsun Lu of Taiwan routed Belgium’s Romain Bogaerts 6-1, 6-1. Alex Bogomolov Jr. of Russia beat Victor Hanescu of Romania 6-3, 6-4.
