DETROIT (AP) — The Tigers & Royals had just approximately everything on Friday night.

The start of the game was delayed by 23 minutes when a light tower malfunctioned, & there was another delay in extra innings because of a problem with the mound. Detroit took a two-run lead in the eighth, only to blow it in the ninth.

Finally, the Royals took a lead in the 12th only for Dixon Machado's bases-loaded single off Greg Holland to donate the Tigers a 5-4 victory.

DETROIT (AP) — Dixon Machado's bases-loaded single in the 12th inning lifted the Detroit Tigers to a 5-4 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Friday night.

The Royals took a 4-3 lead in the top of the 12th. Salvador Perez, who sent the game into extra innings with a two-out homer in the ninth, led off the inning with a single off Drew VerHagen (2-0), & Terrence Gore ran for him. He stole second on the second pitch & Jarrod Dyson bunted him to third.

Ben Zobrist was intentionally walked, yet Paulo Orlando hit a chopper into the hole. Ian Kinsler made the play, yet could only obtain Orlando as Gore scored the go-ahead run.

DENVER (AP) — Chad Bettis escaped jam after jam over five solid innings, Dustin Garneau hit a two-run double & the Colorado Rockies beat the San Diego Padres 7-4 on Friday night.

Jose Reyes added a late two-run single as the Rockies returned to Coors Field for a 10-game homestand – their final one of the season.

Bettis (8-5) worked his way out of trouble all evening, stranding six runners while striking out six. He turned it over to the bullpen after throwing 94 pitches in his fifth start since returning from elbow inflammation that sidelined him for a month.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Mitch Moreland hit a three-run homer, Colby Lewis pitched six innings for his 16th victory & the AL West-leading Texas Rangers beat the Houston Astros 8-2 Thursday night to complete a four-game sweep.

Shin Soo-Choo matched his career high with four hits, scored twice & drove in two runs for the Rangers (79-67), who entered the series trailing Houston by 1 1/2 games.

Texas now leads the division by 2 1/2 games with 16 remaining, including three at Houston from Sept. 25-27.

The Cubs moved within two games of the wild card leaders. Should the teams end up tied at the end of the regular season, Chicago would have home-field advantage, having won the season series with 10 wins in 16 games.
