(Reuters) – The New York Red Bulls clinched a berth in the Major League Soccer postseason & climbed to the top of the Eastern Conference on Sunday with a 2-0 victory over Portland. Goals from Felipe & Damien Perrinelle in the first half sealed the win for New York, who became the first team into the playoffs. New York are on 48 points, one more than Columbus Crew in second. Portland, on 41 points, hold the sixth playoff spot in the West.

With the score tied at 0-0 & half-time swift approaching, Felipe brought the game to life with a 30-yard strike to donate New York the lead in the 43rd minute.

Things quickly received worse for the home side as they fell 2-0 down in first-half stoppage time after Perrinelle headed home.

July 27 (Reuters) – James Rodriguez curled home a superb free kick to cap Real Madrid's 3-0 win over Inter Milan in a friendly in Guangzhou on Monday.

The Colombian midfielder, brought on for just the last 10 minutes of the International Champions Cup match, stepped up to bend the ball around the Inter wall from 25 metres out, giving goalkeeper Samir Handanovic no chance.

Real Madrid youth product Jese had given his side the lead half an hour in, deftly controlling Marcelo's cross with his right foot, then stepping inside to score with his left at Handanovic's near post.

WARSAW, May 3 (Reuters) – A Polish soccer fan died on Saturday after he was hit by a rubber bullet fired by police, leading to violent clashes in a provincial town hours after in which 14 officers were wounded, police said.

Police in Knurow faced a crowd of fans who bombarded them with petrol bombs & other missiles after gathering late on Saturday outside the hospital where the 27-year-old was pronounced dead.

(Reuters) – Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy replaced Australia's Adam Scott as the world's top ranked golfer after winning the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in Ohio on Sunday.

McIlroy, 25, took the world number one ranking for the fifth time, replacing Scott, who had held top honours for 11 weeks.

The British Open champion carded a 66 on Sunday to complete at 15-under-par 265 for a two-stroke victory over Spain's Sergio Garcia at the Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio.
