Brazil held by Ecuador, Peru sole winners in Copa America

(Reuters) – Eight times champions Brazil were held 0-0 by Ecuador in the glamor game as the second day of the centenary Copa America tournament mustered up only one, albeit spectacular, goal from three matches on Saturday.

Paolo Guerrero's diving header helped put Peru in the driving seat in Group B with a 1-0 win over Haiti in Seattle after Costa Rica & Paraguay had moreover played out a goalless draw in Group A in Orlando.

Neither Brazil nor Ecuador were able to dominate the match in Pasadena & it was the Andean side who might consider themselves unlucky not to have snatched all three points after having a goal chalked off 20 minutes into the second half.

Madrid (AFP) – Real Madrid's Colombian playmaker James Rodriguez faces a spell on the sidelines after suffering a thigh tear whilst on international duty in midweek.

"A tear in his left thigh has been diagnosed as a result of the blow suffered in the match between Colombia & Peru," Madrid said in a statement on their website.

The club refused to estimate how long the top scorer at the 2014 World Cup will be out of action, yet he didn't train with the rest of his teammates on Thursday & seems certain to miss Saturday's trip to Espanyol.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Jozy Altidore scored a pair of second-half goals in his return to the U.S. national team following an injury filled summer, & the Americans rallied to beat Peru 2-1 in an exhibition Friday night.

Preparing for next month's one-game playoff against Mexico for a berth in the 2017 Confederations Cup, the Americans fell behind in the 20th minute when Daniel Chavez's 20-yard shot caromed off defender Omar Gonzalez & looped over the outstretched right arm of goalkeeper Brad Guzan, who retained the starting job despite the return of Tim Howard from a 14-month national team sabbatical.

While the visitors had a 59-41 percent possession advantage in the first half, Altidore dampened the mostly pro-Peruvian crowd 28,896 at RFK Stadium, where the Americans improved to 15-3-5 at their most frequently used venue.
