Montevideo (AFP) – Brazil will be without Barcelona star Neymar & Paris Saint-Germain defender David Luiz on Tuesday when they face a tricky 2018 World Cup qualifying trip to Paraguay with renewed uncertainty swirling around their campaign.

The Brazilians are licking their wounds after the disappointment of Friday's 2-2 draw with Uruguay, when they squandered a two-goal lead & finished the game clinging on for the point.

For the opening half hour in Recife, Brazil were irresistible, attacking with precision & purpose in what looked like being their best performance since their 2014 World Cup semi-final debacle against Germany.

ASUNCION, Sept 15 (Reuters) – South America's troubled soccer confederation CONMEBOL has approved a reform plan after it was caught up in the corruption scandal that has swept the sport & plunged governing body FIFA into crisis.

CONMEBOL said its executive committee had approved a "comprehensive review of the management model & the organisational structure". Ernst & Young had been called in to implement the reforms & the audit firm started work at the confederation's headquarters in Asuncion, Paraguay on Monday.

CONMEBOL, an influential grouping that includes traditional soccer powers like Brazil & Argentina, is heavily embroiled in the corruption probe led by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Bobadilla sees red after penning new Augsburg deal

Berlin (AFP) – Paraguay striker Raul Bobadilla penned a contract extension at Augsburg until 2018, only to be sent off after just 45 minutes into the new Bundesliga season on Saturday.

The 28-year-old Bobadilla was shown a second yellow card, & the subsequent red, when he was booked just before the half-time whistle at home to Hertha Berlin.

Having caught Hertha captain Fabian Lustenberger in the face early on, Bobadilla was booked with five minutes gone & was then shown his second card when he caught Lustenberger on the hip during added time at the end of the first-half.

ASUNCION (Reuters) – Paraguay has offered to be one of the official backers of Michel Platini's bid for the FIFA presidency, the country's soccer association said in a letter sent to FIFA.

Candidates for the FIFA presidency have to present the written support of five national soccer associations by Oct. 26, four months before the election.

"The Paraguayan Football Association (APF) is honored to officially offer its backing to Michel Platini's candidacy for the president of FIFA," said the association in a letter addressed to FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke.

ASUNCION, July 23 (Reuters) – The United States has sent Paraguay an extradition request for Nicolas Leoz, the former president of CONMEBOL, South America's soccer confederation, who was arrested on suspicion of racketeering in a corruption probe, Paraguay's Foreign Ministry said on Thursday.

Leoz, 86, has been under house arrest since June 1 after he & 13 other international soccer officials & sports media & marketing executives were hit with U.S. charges involving more than $150 million in bribes.

"We have received the documentation from the U.S. Embassy & have forwarded it to the Supreme Court," Juana Nunez, the ministry's liaison with Paraguay's justice system, told Reuters.
