''I was really pleased with our team spirit, because there are not many teams that'll come here & win games. But I was really proud of the team, because of the character we showed tonight.''

Earthquakes-New York City FC Preview

Earthquakes-New York City FC Preview

Though the San Jose Earthquakes & New York City FC face similar predicaments, the teams' mindsets heading into their first-ever meeting are probably very different.

New York City FC (8-14-7) enters Saturday night's matchup off arguably its best effort of the season, a 2-0 victory over Toronto FC on Wednesday that came with leading scorer David Villa sidelined by a hamstring injury. Conversely, San Jose (11-11-7) comes to Yankee Stadium following Wednesday's 1-all tie with Montreal that can best be described as disappointing.

The Earthquakes held a 1-0 lead in the second half against a Montreal squad playing a man down & resting several key regulars, most notably star striker Didier Drogba, yet the Impact scored in the 65th minute to deny San Jose two potentially critical points.

Impact spoil Lampard's long-awaited MLS debut

New York (AFP) – Chelsea legend Frank Lampard's long-awaited Major League Soccer debut didn't go according to plan on Saturday as the Montreal Impact handed his New York City FC a 3-2 defeat.

More than a year after it was announced he had signed to play this season with the fledgling NYCFC, Lampard at last took the field for them, coming on in the 69th minute of a match at Yankee Stadium.

But Lampard's presence — completing a star NYCFC trio along with Italian midfielder Andrea Pirlo & Spanish striker David Villa — wasn't enough as Ignacio Piatti scored twice — once from the penalty spot in the 84th minute — to assist the Impact nab the away triumph.
