ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Prized rookie Luis Severino rebounded from his worst start, Greg Bird homered & drove in two runs, & the New York Yankees beat the Tampa Bay Rays 3-1 on Wednesday night to keep pace in the AL playoff race.

The second-place Yankees, who lead the wild-card chase, took two of three from Tampa Bay & stayed three games behind Toronto in the AL East.

Severino (4-3) allowed one run & six hits in 5 2-3 innings. The right-hander gave up a career-high six earned runs over 2 1-3 innings in an 11-5 loss Friday to Toronto.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Nick Franklin hit a go-ahead two-run homer in the sixth inning & the Tampa Bay Rays beat the AL wild-card leading New York Yankees 6-3 on Tuesday night.

Hobbled Alex Rodriguez & Greg Bird homered for the Yankees, who remain three games behind AL East-leading Toronto, which lost 3-2 at Atlanta.

Franklin, who entered when shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera left after four innings with a left knee strain, put the Rays up 4-3 on his homer off Nick Rumbelow (1-1). J.P. Arencibia made it 6-3 on a two-run single in the eighth.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Alex Rodriguez enjoyed being overshadowed by a rookie.

Rodriguez had a tying, two-out RBI double in the ninth & Slade Heathcott followed with a three-run homer, leading the New York Yankees to a 4-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night.

The 24-year old Heathcott's second career homer came on his first at-bat in the major's since May 27. He was called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Saturday.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Alex Rodriguez had a tying, two-out RBI double in the ninth & Slade Heathcott followed with a three-run homer, leading the New York Yankees to a 4-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night.

The victory moved the Yankees within three-games of AL East-leading Toronto.

Erasmo Ramirez held the Yankees hitless until Carlos Beltran led off the eighth with a hot shot that took a short-hop off first baseman Richie Shaffer & went into right field.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Erasmo Ramirez lost his no-hit bid against the New York Yankees when Carlos Beltran singled leading off the eighth inning.

Beltran hit a complex liner that took a short-hop & hit off first baseman Richie Shaffer & shot into right field.

The Yankees had two baserunners through the seventh. Alex Rodriguez walked with two outs in the fourth & Brett Gardner drew another walk to start the seventh.

NEW YORK (AP) — Mark Teixeira will miss the rest of the season after tests revealed the New York Yankees first baseman has a broken right leg.

Teixeira fouled a ball off his shin Aug. 17 & has started only once since. He had trouble running in that game & was not improving much, so the Yankees sent him for a third round of tests Friday that finally showed a fracture.

''Actually, not surprised,'' Teixeira said. ''It's been really painful. I know the difference between pain & soreness. It's been painful since day one. We were just kind of trying to figure out why it wasn't healing & today we figured it out.''

NEW YORK (AP) — Mark Teixeira will miss the rest of the season after tests revealed the New York Yankees first baseman has a fractured right leg.

Teixeira fouled a ball off his shin Aug. 17 & has started only once since. He had trouble running in that game & was not improving much, so the Yankees sent him for a third round of tests Friday that finally showed a fracture.

Though not entirely unexpected, it's certainly a blow to the Yankees at an significant time in their push for the playoffs. New York was 1 1/2 games behind first-place Toronto in the AL East going into their four-game series Friday night. The Yankees have a comfortable lead in the wild card race.

The opener of the four-game series between division-leading Toronto & the second-place Yankees was postponed because of rain on Thursday night more than an hour before the scheduled first pitch.

The teams will make the game up with a doubleheader Saturday starting at 1:05 p.m. The second game starts a half-hour after the opener ends.
