McCarty returns to fill out Celtics coaching staff

BOSTON (AP) — The Boston Celtics have filled out new coach Brad Stevens’ staff.

The team says that former Celtics forward Walter McCarty will return as an assistant coach. Also joining the team are Ron Adams & Micah Shrewsberry. Jamie Young & Jay Larranaga had already been in position.

Adams spent the last three seasons as an assistant with the Chicago Bulls. Shrewsberry spent three seasons as an assistant at Purdue & worked with Stevens at Butler. McCarty worked for the Celtics as a community relations consultant last season. He had been a member of Jim O’Brien’s coaching staff with the Indiana Pacers during the 2010-11 season & spent three seasons at Louisville as an assistant.

Bobcats sign free agent F Anthony Tolliver

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Charlotte Bobcats have announced they’ve signed free agent forward Anthony Tolliver.

The Bobcats made the move Monday yet did not release financial terms of the deal.

Bobcats president of basketball operations Rod Higgins says in a release that Tolliver is ”a quality young huge man who will add depth to our front line.”

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (AP) — Tom Crean still cannot forget the vehicle that Dwyane Wade was driving a decade ago.

It was Wade’s final season at Marquette, where Crean was coaching at the time. Wade had moved off-campus after getting married & having his first son. And his vehicle received broken into three times during that Final Four season. Making it road-worthy again would have cost $900. The car was only worth $700 at the time.

The repairs never received made.

Former Kings suitor funds drive to defeat arena

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Billionaire Chris Hansen, who tried to move the Kings NBA franchise from Sacramento to Seattle, is behind a secretive effort to thwart the city’s efforts to build a new downtown arena for the professional basketball team, California’s campaign watchdog disclosed Friday after an investigation.

The announcement is an embarrassment for Hansen, who lost his bid after NBA owners voted to keep the team in California’s capital city, & it could undermine support for the local ballot measure Hansen funded that is designed to put to a citywide vote the council’s planned $258 million subsidy for a downtown arena.

”I made a mistake I regret,” Hansen said in a written statement. ”While I’m sure everyone can appreciate how effortless it is to obtain caught up in the heat of battle, with the benefit of hindsight, this is clearly a decision I regret.”

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Kobe Bryant isn’t sure he’ll be ready to play when the Los Angeles Lakers open the season on Oct. 29, although he remains ahead of schedule in rehabbing his surgically repaired Achilles’ tendon.

Bryant turns 35 next week & he vowed that his 17-year career is ”definitely not over.”

”I just want that jewelry,” he said, referring to the possibility of claiming his sixth NBA championship.
