MLS wants to be 'guinea pig' for video reviews

(Reuters) – Major League Soccer in North America is fast-tracking plans to use video reviews to aid referee decisions, commissioner Don Garber said on Thursday.

Garber has long been a proponent of using video to ensure crucial calls are correct, & the league recently hosted a visit to New Jersey by officials from the international rule-making body IFAB for the first ever live trials.

The technology was tested during games between local youth teams, with the referee in constant communication with a video assistant referee.

Earthquakes-New York City FC Preview

Earthquakes-New York City FC Preview

Though the San Jose Earthquakes & New York City FC face similar predicaments, the teams' mindsets heading into their first-ever meeting are probably very different.

New York City FC (8-14-7) enters Saturday night's matchup off arguably its best effort of the season, a 2-0 victory over Toronto FC on Wednesday that came with leading scorer David Villa sidelined by a hamstring injury. Conversely, San Jose (11-11-7) comes to Yankee Stadium following Wednesday's 1-all tie with Montreal that can best be described as disappointing.

The Earthquakes held a 1-0 lead in the second half against a Montreal squad playing a man down & resting several key regulars, most notably star striker Didier Drogba, yet the Impact scored in the 65th minute to deny San Jose two potentially critical points.

Crew-D.C. United Preview

Crew-D.C. United Preview

A string of superior results has the Columbus Crew's confidence soaring, while D.C. United may have had theirs restored with their most recent outcome.

In a game with significant ramifications in the Eastern Conference, the Crew aim for a franchise-record fourth straight road win in Saturday night's matchup with still-slumping United.

Columbus' 4-1-1 surge & D.C.'s four-game winless stretch has created a tight four-way race for first place entering the final month. Though one point back of conference leader New England, United (13-10-6) is only one ahead of fourth-place Columbus (12-9-8) & tied for second with the New York Red Bulls, who hold two games in hand on those three teams.
