Costa, Gabriel charged over Chelsea-Arsenal clash

London (AFP) – Diego Costa & Gabriel have been charged with violent conduct & improper conduct respectively over incidents during Chelsea's 2-0 win over Arsenal, the Football Association announced on Monday.

Chelsea striker Costa has been charged for apparently swinging his arm at Laurent Koscielny during Saturday's game, with Arsenal's Gabriel charged for his reaction to being sent off for kicking out at Costa shortly after.

Gabriel's team-mate Santi Cazorla has moreover been warned as to his behaviour following his dismissal after in the game, while both teams were charged with failing to control their players.

LONDON (AP) — After an uncharacteristically feeble start by Chelsea to its Premier League title defense, the return of Diego Costa's fiery temperament was just what Jose Mourinho needed to rouse his under-performers against Arsenal.

Job done. Even if Costa's aggressive & confrontational tactics do little to endear Chelsea to the neutrals.

There was no goal from last season's top scorer in Saturday's 2-0 victory over Arsenal yet the hot-headed striker's contribution seemed even more significant. Costa managed to escape being dismissed for lashing out at Laurent Koscielny before appearing to incite Gabriel Paulista into being sent off for a retaliatory kick on him right in front of the referee.

LONDON, May 8 (Reuters) – Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has been fined 10,000 pounds ($17,000) after sarcastically praising the match referee & English referees' chief following a key Premier League defeat last month, the FA said on Thursday.

The Londoners lost 2-1 at home to a struggling Sunderland side, which ended Mourinho's 77-game unbeaten league record at Stamford Bridge & hit their title bid, with Manchester City now poised to wrap up the championship this weekend.

"I want to congratulate again (referee) Mike Dean. I think his performance was unbelievable," Mourinho told reporters after a controversial Sunderland penalty, which led to his assistant Rui Faria being sent to the stands after a pitchside rant.
