Soccer-Defender Layun leaves Watford to join Porto on loan

Sept 1 (Reuters) – FC Porto have signed defender Miguel Layun from Watford on a season-long loan, with an option to buy him for six million euros ($6.76 million) at the end of the current campaign, the Portuguese club said.

The 27-year-old joined the Hornets in January & scored his first goal for the club in their opening day 2-2 draw against Everton in the Premier League this season.

The Mexican international said he hoped to break into the first team at Porto, who won the Champions League in 2003-04.

A pair of sides aiming for their first win of the season will clash Saturday when Watford welcomes West Bromwich Albion to Vicarage Road.

After finishing second in the Championship last season with 89 points, the Hornets gave a satisfactory account of themselves in their return to the Premier League last week, earning a point in a tense 2-2 draw with Everton at Goodison Park.

Watford twice had one-goal leads, only to be pegged back on each occasion by the Toffees. Mexico international Miguel Layun pounced on a loose ball in the penalty area & scored from near the penalty spot in the 13th minute & Odion Ighalo netted from the top of the box in the 83rd to provide the goals for the Hornets, who settled for a share of the points after Everton's Arouna Kone scored the equaliser in the 86th minute.

'Chicharito' in strong Mexico Gold Cup squad

Mexico City (AFP) – Mexico named striker Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez, Real Sociedad star Carlos Vela & Watford fullback Miguel Layun in a strong 23-man squad for next month's Gold Cup.

Coach Miguel Herrera announced the squad the same night that a different roster — seen as a B-team — was playing Bolivia in the Copa America tournament in Chile, which ends July 4.

Herrera saved his biggest stars for the July 7-July 26 Gold Cup, which is hosted by defending champions the USA & is the marquee tournament of the Confederation of the North, Central American & Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF).

The reigning Liga MX champion demolished its struggling Mexico City rivals Pumas 4-1 on Monday to move into first place in the league with two games in hand.

America dominated the game from early on in the Estadio Universitario, scoring its first three goals in an eight-minute period midway through the first half.
