Redskins WR DeSean Jackson out with hamstring injury

LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — Washington Redskins wide receiver DeSean Jackson injure his left hamstring in the first quarter against Miami & will not return.

The injury occurred on the first play of Washington's second series Sunday. Jackson went deep down the right sideline & was overthrown. He clutched the back of his leg after the pass fell incomplete.

Jackson received treatment on the sideline, & the team determined he would not be healthy enough to continue.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Miami Dolphins first-round draft pick DeVante Parker, who had been recovering from foot surgery, made his preseason debut Thursday night & caught a pass in his team's 22-17 loss to Tampa Bay.

Almost all of the Dolphins' starters sat out, & they didn't use either of their top two quarterbacks, Ryan Tannehill or Matt Moore. Parker played briefly, was targeted three times & caught a pass on a slant-in for 11 yards for Miami (1-3).

''It's a satisfactory feeling to obtain back out there after missing a lot of practices,'' Parker said. ''I wasn't thinking approximately my foot at all. My foot feels good.''

Jaguars' Thomas to have surgery, expected to miss 3 games

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Julius Thomas is expected to miss the first three games of the regular season following hand surgery.

The team said Tuesday that Thomas will have surgery Wednesday to repair ligament damage in his right hand. The decision came after Thomas received a second opinion.

General manager Dave Caldwell described the surgery as ''more or less just cleaning it up & tightening it up.''

WASHINGTON (AP) — Nationals right-hander Stephen Strasburg has been lifted after just four innings & 60 pitches against Miami.

Strasburg did not show any obvious sign of injury during his final inning Sunday. The Nationals do not provide injury information during games.

Strasburg allowed a three-run homer to Justin Bour in the first & a solo shot to Derek Dietrich to open the fourth.

EDISON, N.J. (AP) — Erik Compton ended his season Thursday when he withdrew from The Barclays after eighth hole with a respiratory infection.

Compton, who already has gone through two heart transplants, was No. 122 in the FedEx Cup & would have needed a strong week to move into the top 100 & advance to the next playoff event at the TPC Boston.

Last week at the Wyndham Championship, the 35-year-old Compton opened with a career-low 62 yet had to withdraw before the third round because of gout. He spent last week at home in Miami & developed a respiratory infection, & didn't decide to show up in New Jersey until Wednesday night to donate it a shot.

Grossman, who hasn't thrown a pass in an NFL game since 2011, is trying to beat out T.J. Yates & Sean Renfree for the primary reserve role behind three-time Pro Bowl selection Matt Ryan.

Falcons donate audition to former Bears, Redskins QB Grossman

ATLANTA (AP) — Rex Grossman, who hasn't taken a snap in an NFL game since 2011, could shortly join the competition to be the backup for Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan.

Grossman, 35, was given a physical Tuesday morning & a workout was planned after the team's practice.

Falcons coach Dan Quinn said he is pleased with backup quarterbacks T.J. Yates & Sean Renfree. Even so, Quinn said he is always looking for ways to improve.
