Soccer-Guadalajara win first match under new coach Almeyda

MEXICO CITY, Sept 20 (Reuters) – Guadalajara gave new coach Matias Almeyda a winning start when they beat Queretaro 2-1 at home on Sunday although Mexico midfielder Marco Fabian's red card means he misses next weekend's 'clasico' against America.

The win lifted the Chivas into 13th place in the Apertura championship standings with 10 points from nine matches & is a satisfactory start for Almeyda in his main task which is to keep his side clear of relegation.

The Argentine was signed on a two-year deal to steer his side away from the relegation standings, a table based on teams' results over three seasons, where they were languishing when they sacked predecessor Jose Manuel de la Torre last Monday.

CHICAGO (AP) — Forward Rubio Rubin & Royal Mouscron-Peruwelz defender Shane O'Neill were not included in the U.S. roster for Olympic soccer qualifying after their clubs refused to release them for next month's tournament.

MK Dons goalkeeper Cody Cropper moreover was not in the 20-man roster announced Friday following a knee injury that required surgery last week. His club projected he will be sidelined for up to six weeks.

U.S. coach Andi Herzog left off Bayern Munich forward Julian Green, a member of last year's U.S. World Cup team who is with Bayern Munich II in the German third tier.

MEXICO CITY, Sept 15 (Reuters) – Guadalajara have fired coach Jose de la Torre after Mexico's most popular club started the season with five defeats in their opening eight fixtures.

The Chivas said in a statement that the former Mexico coach, who started his second stint in charge of the club last October, had not "achieved the results that the team requires".

De la Torre, fired by Mexico in 2013 with the team in danger of failing to qualify for the World Cup, was Guadalajara's 12th coach in the last four years.

Soccer-Pumas win fifth in a row to go top in Mexico

MEXICO CITY, Sept 13 (Reuters) – Two goals from Eduardo Herrera helped the Pumas of Mexico's National Autonomous University to a 3-0 win over Veracruz on Sunday, lifting them into top spot in the Apertura league.

Herrera received the opener after 14 minutes when he turned home Ismael Sosa's cross. Matias Brito doubled their advantage 16 minutes after with a fiery left-foot strike from outside the box, & Herrera added a third from the penalty spot after 36 minutes.

It was Pumas' fifth consecutive win & takes them onto 18 points, just ahead of Leon on goal difference.

MADRID (AP) — Barcelona coach Luis Enrique will be able to count on his first-choice attacking lineup of Lionel Messi, Neymar & Luis Suarez for Saturday's match against Atletico Madrid.

There were doubts Messi would make it, given that he'd missed every training session this week due to the impending arrival of his second child.

But Messi was included in the squad list on Friday after news emerged that the Argentina forward had become a father for a second time.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Gustavo Ayon scored 16 of his 38 points in the fourth quarter & Mexico overcame a 15-point deficit to hand Argentina its first loss of the Olympic qualifier, 95-83 on Wednesday night in the last game of the second round.

Ayon moreover grabbed 14 rebounds, while Jorge Gutierrez scored 23 points & Francisco Cruz added 21 for the Mexicans. They earned the No. 2 seed & will face Argentina again Friday night in the FIBA Americas semifinals.

Earlier, Canada beat the Dominican Republic 120-103 to complete first & will play Venezuela in the other semifinal.

A dismal 4-1 exhibition loss to Brazil on Tuesday night left the United States facing a month of questions ahead of its playoff against Mexico on Oct. 10 for the region's berth in the 2017 Confederations Cup.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Lionel Messi scored on a spectacular 89th-minute volley, capping Argentina's comeback from a two-goal deficit in a 2-2 exhibition tie against Mexico on Tuesday night.

Sergio Aguero beat goalkeeper Moises Munoz in the 85th minute after Ezequiel Lavezzi kept the ball from rolling over the end line & cut it back.

Aguero then lofted a 25-yard pass over defender Oswaldo Alanis as Messi timed a burst into the penalty area. Messi let the ball bounce off his chest into the air & then, while falling, poked a 7-yard shot past Munoz at the near post.
