PITTSBURGH (AP) — Clint Hurdle doesn't dwell on things. What's next is what's important, a mantra the Pittsburgh Pirates manager has pounded home repeatedly since the day he arrived in 2010.

More than four years later, it has become fully ingrained on a team that just keeps rolling along.

Andrew McCutchen hit his 19th homer & Pedro Alvarez made up for some shaky defense by adding his 20th of the season as the Pirates held off the San Francisco Giants 5-2 on Sunday night.

Morton remains unbeaten as Pirates top Brewers 2-0

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Charlie Morton is not a complicated guy. When his sinker is working, the Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander is effective. When it's not, his night tends to end shortly after it begins.

It's been that way for most of Morton's uneven eight-year career. Finally healthy & mechanically sound after an injury shortened 2014, Morton's favorite pitch is finding the strike zone consistently. The results have quickly followed suit.

Morton scattered three hits in 7 1-3 innings to remain unbeaten in his return from hip surgery as the Pirates beat the Milwaukee Brewers 2-0 on Wednesday night.

ATLANTA (AP) — Gerrit Cole occasionally struggled with his command, hitting two batters & issuing a season-high three walks.

It didn't matter, though. Cole was still tough enough to become the NL's leader with nine wins & a 1.73 ERA, pitching the Pittsburgh Pirates over the Atlanta Braves 3-0 Sunday.

''I was all over the place today,'' he said. ''And like I said, I wasn't very efficient. It's not typical of me. There were some weird things going on with the delivery out there. Hopefully, we'll be able to figure it out.''

Cole, Pirates hand Tigers first loss of season, 5-4

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Bases loaded. No outs. A two-run lead against baseball's top-hitting team in serious jeopardy. There really wasn't much mystery approximately what was coming from Pittsburgh Pirates reliever Jared Hughes.

''You just have to pound the zone, that's the huge thing,'' Hughes said. ''The other hitters know you're going to do it & they're probably going to be swinging.''

And for once, the swings from the Detroit Tigers came up empty.
