Ex-Manchester United star Cantona pledges to house, feed refugees

Paris (AFP) – Former Manchester United star Eric Cantona evoked the memory of his own grandparents fleeing war when promising on French radio Tuesday to house & feed refugees for a period of "at least" two years.

"I'm organising that with authorities in Marseille," Cantona told France Inter radio, explaining he intended to provide a small house, garden & food for a period of at least two years.

"If you house someone who does not have the right to work, then they need to eat too," said the enigmatic former France captain.

AMSTERDAM, Sept 19 (Reuters) – Luke Shaw has received a visit from PSV Eindhoven defender Hector Moreno, whose challenge in Tuesday's Champions League tie broke the Manchester United fullback's leg in two places.

Moreno was accompanied on Friday by PSV coach Phillip Cocu at the hospital in Geldorp, where Shaw underwent surgery directly after being admitted.

"We first asked whether Shaw would meet us, which he wanted to," Cocu told Dutch media on Saturday. "We offered him the assist of PSV should he need anything in relation to his recovery."

Manchester (United Kingdom) (AFP) – Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal admits Luke Shaw faces a long recovery process as the England defender aims to return to fitness after his horrendous leg break.

Shaw suffered a double fracture of his right leg during United's Champions League defeat at PSV Eindhoven in midweek, a gruesome injury that dominated the headlines of another trying week for Van Gaal's club.

The Dutchman spoke with the left-back on Thursday, following his initial surgery straight after the game on Tuesday, & was expecting to see him back in Manchester over the weekend, although Van Gaal warned his young star to brace himself for a long period of rehabilitation.

LONDON (Reuters) – English soccer club Manchester United expects profit to jump by as much as 46 percent next year thanks to a return to Champions League soccer & a record kit deal & will start paying regular dividends.

The 20-times English champions, who have struggled for form since manager Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, said on Thursday it expected adjusted core earnings to be a record 165 million to 175 million pounds ($256 million-$272 million) in 2015-16, above the previous best of 130 million set in 2013-14.

Sept 18 (Reuters) – West Ham United manager Slaven Bilic has said the disappointing results by Premier League teams in Europe competition this week should not be viewed as a major surprise.

Manchester United, Manchester City & Arsenal all slumped to defeats in their opening Champions League fixtures in midweek, while Liverpool were held to a 1-1 draw at Bordeaux in the Europa League.

Chelsea were the only English side to win their first Champions League fixture this season, beating Maccabi Tel Aviv 4-0, while Tottenham Hotspur came from behind to beat Qarabag 3-1 in their Europa League opener at White Hart Lane.
