Juve suffer Mandzukic injury blow

Milan (AFP) – Juventus have suffered a blow after Mario Mandzukic was sidelined for up to three weeks on Monday, notably ruling the Croatian out of the Turin giants' Champions League clash at home to Sevilla.

Both Mandzukic & fellow striker Alvaro Morata were forced off towards the end of Juve's 2-0 victory away to Genoa on Sunday, which ended the reigning champions' quest for a first Serie A win of the campaign.

Mandzukic underwent tests on Monday which "revealed a first grade tear in his right thigh muscle. He will be sidelined from competition for 20 days," according to a statement on Juve's website.

Pellegrini right to be bleak over title predictions

Pellegrini right to be bleak over title predictions

Manchester (United Kingdom) (AFP) – Manuel Pellegrini took no pleasure in being proved correct yet Manchester City's surprise 2-1 home defeat to West Ham illustrated his belief that the Premier League title is far from over.

The league leaders saw their 11-match winning streak brought to an end thanks to first half goals from Victor Moses & Diafra Sakho for a West Ham side that has won all three of their away games this season — at Arsenal, Liverpool and, now, City.

The day started with City having the potential to move 14 points clear of defending champions Chelsea had results gone their way.

West Ham beats Manchester City 2-1 in the Premier League

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Manchester City's perfect start to the Premier League season ended Saturday with a 2-1 home loss to West Ham, which extended its stunning run of away results.

West Ham needed only six minutes to take the lead, with Victor Moses firing in from long range as City conceded its first league goal of the campaign. It doubled the lead in the 31st when striker Diafra Sakho turned the ball in after a goalmouth scramble from a corner.

Kevin De Bruyne pulled a goal back for City on the stroke of halftime from 20 yards, his first for the club since signing from Wolfsburg, after a neat pass from Sergio Aguero. But the hosts were unable to break down West Ham's stubborn defense again.

Wenger won't be drawn into Mourinho feud

Wenger won't be drawn into Mourinho feud

London (AFP) – Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger insists he won't allow himself to be drawn into another war of words with old rival Jose Mourinho ahead of Saturday's clash at Chelsea.

Wenger & Mourinho have a long history of exchanging jibes through the media in a tetchy relationship that occasionally boils over when they come face to face.

The most memorable examples of that animosity have occurred over the last year, with Wenger infamously shoving Chelsea boss Mourinho during a furious touchline row at Stamford Bridge, while the pair went to tremendous lengths to avoid shaking hands after Arsenal's Community Shield win in August.

Soccer-McClaren looking for reaction to 'car crash'

LONDON, Sept 18 (Reuters) – Newcastle United manager Steve McClaren will be looking for an improved reaction if his team fall behind in Saturday's home game with promoted Watford.

The former England boss, striving to revive his reputation after returning to the Premier League, was disappointed with the manner in which players dropped their heads after conceding the second goal in a 2-0 defeat at West Ham on Monday that sent them to the bottom of the table.

"The key was how we reacted to the second goal," he told a news conference on Friday.

Manchester City hope for boost from Aguero return

Manchester City hope for boost from Aguero return

Manchester (United Kingdom) (AFP) – Premier League leaders Manchester City hope Sergio Aguero's early return from injury can spark an immediate response after their latest Champions League meltdown.

Manuel Pellegrini's side were buoyant after winning their opening five Premier League matches, & so it was all the more surprising that on Tuesday they lost 2-1 at home to a Juventus side who have started the Serie A season poorly.

The task now for City is to pick up their domestic momentum again, by claiming a 12th successive Premier League victory.
