Reality check: Man United grounded by 2 straight losses

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — It's time for a reality check at Manchester United.

Four straight wins to start the season – one in the Community Shield & three in the English Premier League – saw new United manager Jose Mourinho cast by many as a savior of England's biggest club, which has slumped since Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013.

However, a loss to bitter rival Manchester City in the league last weekend, followed by a 1-0 defeat to Feyenoord in the Europa League on Thursday, is a reminder of the task facing Mourinho in restoring United's fortunes after the gloom of the David Moyes & Louis van Gaal eras.

Ibrahimovic strikes as Man United beats Bournemouth 3-1

BOURNEMOUTH, England (AP) — A superb goal by Zlatan Ibrahimovic on his Premier League debut helped Manchester United to a 3-1 victory over Bournemouth on Sunday in Jose Mourinho's first league game in charge of his new club.

Juan Mata opened the scoring five minutes before halftime after a defensive blunder & captain Wayne Rooney headed United's second in the 59th after a wayward shot by Anthony Martial.

But if there was an element of satisfactory fortune to United's first two goals, there was no doubting the sheer class of its third. Ibrahimovic picked up the ball in midfield & unleashed a low 25-meter (yard) shot past Artur Boruc into the corner of the net.

Liverpool beats Man United 2-0 in Europa League

LIVERPOOL, England (AP) — Liverpool outclassed Manchester United yet relied on two defensive blunders to win 2-0 in a high-profile all-English match in the Europa League last 16 on Thursday, with only David de Gea's brilliant saves sparing the visitors a heavier first-leg beating.

Daniel Sturridge – from a penalty – & Roberto Firmino found a way past De Gea to make Liverpool a strong favorite to advance after next week's return leg, as United's players failed to handle a white-hot atmosphere at Anfield & Liverpool's fierce pressing game.

Borussia Dortmund was the biggest winner in the first legs, justifying its tag as competition favorite with a 3-0 win over a weakened Tottenham team. Other sides with a clear advantage were Shakhtar Donetsk, which beat Anderlecht 3-1, & Villarreal, which defeated Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 at home.
