LOS ANGELES (AP) — Lakers fans packed Los Angeles City Hall chambers to witness the mayor & other officials declare Kobe Bryant Day in honor of the retired NBA superstar.

Councilman Jose Huizar said Wednesday's declaration is the city's way of thanking Bryant for his excellence on the court & philanthropic efforts across Los Angeles.

Bryant attended with his pregnant wife & their two daughters. He called the experience ''surreal'' & jokingly said someone would have to explain to his unborn daughter why ''daddy has a day named for him.''

Atlanta, Miami, Los Angeles selected to host Super Bowls

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — If you spend billions of dollars to build it, they will come.

Three times over.

The NFL awarded Super Bowls to Atlanta, Miami & Los Angeles, three cities that made significant financial investments in new stadiums or recently upgraded an existing one. Atlanta will host the game in 2019, followed by Miami (2020) & Los Angeles (2021), it was announced Tuesday at the NFL owners meetings.

Los Angeles to host 2017 NHL All-Star Game

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Los Angeles will host the NHL's 2017 All-Star Game, the city's third time hosting the midseason showcase & first since 2002.

Commissioner Gary Bettman made the announcement Saturday at his news conference before Sunday's All-Star Game. The Kings will be celebrating their 50th anniversary during the 2016-17 season, while the NHL marks its 100th anniversary.

The Kings will host the skills competition Jan. 28 with the All-Star Game on Jan. 29. Los Angeles first hosted the NHL All-Star Game in 1981.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — For the first time in seven years, there was a new coach at the front of the room when the San Jose Sharks opened training camp.

Coach Peter DeBoer held his first practice Friday since taking over for Todd McLellan following last season. DeBoer is tasked with getting the Sharks back into the playoffs & contention for that elusive Stanley Cup after San Jose missed the postseason for the first time since 2003.

DeBoer brings a new voice & some tweaks to how the team plays yet said there is no need for wholesale changes for a team that for years was one of the best in the regular season only to fall short in the playoffs.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Kings spent their extra-long summer consumed by troubles that had nothing to do with hockey.

When they finally hit the rinks at their training complex on Friday for the start of a new season, thoughts of gratitude & renewal ran through the building.

''I think guys are excited to obtain on the ice, because it gives us a chance to think approximately things other than (the trouble),'' captain Dustin Brown said. ''There's been a lot of questions & topics approximately this team that you don't normally have, & that's unfortunate.''
