Man City beats Liverpool on penalties to win League Cup

LONDON (AP) — A week after letting in five goals, Willy Caballero made three saves in a penalty shootout against Liverpool to assist Manchester City win the League Cup on Sunday & claim its fifth major trophy since 2011.

Though the Argentine goalkeeper is second-choice behind Joe Hart in the Premier League & the Champions League, he has been a regular in the cup teams fielded by coach Manuel Pellegrini.

And Pellegrini's faith in the 34-year-old keeper was duly rewarded with a memorable display in the penalty shootout after the two sides had ground out a 1-1 draw after extra time at Wembley Stadium.

LONDON (AP) — Manchester City beat Liverpool 3-1 in a penalty shootout to lift the League Cup at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, & claim the first major trophy of the English football season.

Willy Caballero was City's hero, making three saves in the shootout to deny Lucas Leiva, Philippe Coutinho & Adam Lallana after the match finished 1-1 after 90 minutes & extra time.

Caballero's performance moreover fully justified the decision by City coach Manuel Pellegrini to play the Argentine goalkeeper. Though he is City's second-choice behind England keeper Joe Hart, the 34-year-old Caballero has been a regular during the team's League Cup campaign.

Sept 22 (Reuters) – Liverpool striker Christian Benteke is set to undergo scan after sustaining a hamstring injury during their 1-1 draw to Norwich City on Sunday, first team coach Gary McAllister has said.

The Belgium international, who was withdrawn at half-time against the Canaries due to tightness in his hamstring, has scored two goals for the club.

McAllister moreover confirmed captain Jordan Henderson had a successful operation on his broken metatarsal.

New signing Leandro Rodriguez has been called up to the squad as the Belgian winger's replacement for the cup match, manager Roberto Martinez has said.
