No time for Valencia self-pity, says coach Nuno

VALENCIA, Spain (Reuters) – Valencia must quickly put their disappointment at losing Wednesday's Champions League Group H opener at home to Zenit St Petersburg behind them & switch their attention back to La Liga, according to coach Nuno.

Valencia’s hopes of a winning return to Europe's elite club competition after a two-year absence were dashed when Brazil forward Hulk struck twice for the Russian champions in a 3-2 victory at the Mestalla.

Nuno's side have moreover made a less-than-convincing start to their domestic league campaign, drawing their opening two matches before securing a 1-0 win with a late goal at promoted Sporting Gijon last weekend.

MADRID, Sept 15 (Reuters) – Real Madrid coach Rafa Benitez praised his defenders as well as his forwards after Tuesday's 4-0 Champions League victory at home to Shakhtar Donetsk meant the club have not conceded in their opening four games for the first time.

Real rattled in 11 goals without reply in their last two La Liga outings after drawing their opening game of the campaign 0-0, while Cristiano Ronaldo followed up his five-goal haul in Saturday's 6-0 win at Espanyol with a hat-trick in Wednesday's Group A clash at the Bernabeu.

Madrid (AFP) – Cristiano Ronaldo moved in front of Lionel Messi as the top goalscorer in Champions League history with a hat-trick as Real Madrid opened their European campaign with a 4-0 win over 10-man Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday.

Ronaldo scored twice from the penalty spot before heading home to complete his second hat-trick in four days & take his tally in the competition to 80, three ahead of his Barcelona rival.

"I am very happy. I thank my teammates for the confidence they have given me," said Ronaldo.

VALENCIA, Spain, Sept 15 (Reuters) – Valencia go into Wednesday's Champions League Group H opener at home to Zenit St Petersburg with renewed confidence after securing their first La Liga win of the campaign on Saturday, according to captain Dani Parejo.

After disappointing draws with Rayo Vallecano & Deportivo La Coruna in their first two matches, Valencia struck late to snatch a 1-0 success at Sporting Gijon which Parejo said had lifted the players ahead of Zenit's visit to the Mestalla.

"It's always significant when you win," Parejo told a news conference.

MADRID, Sept 14 (Reuters) – Real Madrid midfielder Isco needs to score more goals if he is to keep James Rodriguez out of the side when the Colombia international returns from injury, coach Rafa Benitez said on Monday.

James damaged a thigh muscle on duty with Colombia last week & will probably be sidelined for around a month & Isco played in his place in Saturday's 6-0 La Liga success at Espanyol & is likely to do the same in Tuesday's Champions League Group A opener at home to Shakhtar Donetsk.

While James has two goals in two appearances this term, to add to the 17 he netted last season, Isco has yet to score in his three games & only managed six in 2014-15.
