Catalan independence 'would bar Barcelona from La Liga'

Madrid (AFP) – The head of the Spanish football league warned on Monday that champions Barcelona could not play in Spain's La Liga if Catalan nationalists succeeded in making their region independent.

"The law of sport is very clear: the only non-Spanish competitors are the Andorran clubs" from the small neighbouring principality, said Javier Tebas, president of the Spanish Professional Football League.

If Catalonia broke away from Spain, as nationalists have vowed to do if they win Sunday's regional election, La Liga "would be a league without Catalan clubs", he told Spanish television.

Soccer-Nolito sets up Celta win over lacklustre Sevilla

BARCELONA, Sept 20 (Reuters) – Nolito hit the opening goal for Celta Vigo who took advantage of a lethargic first half from Sevilla to win 2-1 & maintain their unbeaten start in La Liga on Sunday.

Sevilla, who have now not won in four games, went behind when the defence gave Nolito time in the box to pick his spot after 15 minutes.

The home side appeared to be suffering from the exertions of beating Borussia Moenchengladbach in a Champions League group match on Tuesday & Daniel Wass extended Celta's lead after 26 minutes with a low drive into the corner.

Soccer-No time for Valencia self-pity, says coach Nuno

Soccer-No time for Valencia self-pity, says coach Nuno

VALENCIA, Spain, Sept 17 (Reuters) – Valencia must quickly put their disappointment at losing Wednesday's Champions League Group H opener at home to Zenit St Petersburg behind them & switch their attention back to La Liga, according to coach Nuno.

Valencia's hopes of a winning return to Europe's elite club competition after a two-year absence were dashed when Brazil forward Hulk struck twice for the Russian champions in a 3-2 victory at the Mestalla.

Nuno's side have moreover made a less-than-convincing start to their domestic league campaign, drawing their opening two matches before securing a 1-0 win with a late goal at promoted Sporting Gijon last weekend.
