MIAMI (AP) — Former NFL tackle Jonathan Martin posted on Facebook that difficulties in the profession led him to attempt suicide multiple times, & he wanted to share his struggle with social isolation to assist others.

Martin, who retired this year, said his problems date to childhood in California, & to being told his entire life he was not ''black enough.''

''It nearly destroys you, many times, not fitting in,'' he wrote, referring to himself in the third person. ''Your talent & accomplishments on the field never seem to be able to overcome the demons that you carry with you.''

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Quarterback Cam Newton has agreed to franchise record $103.8 million, five-year contract extension with the Carolina Panthers.

Newton will earn $67.6 million over the first three years, the most money ever paid to an NFL player during the first three years of a contract, said a person familiar with negotiations. The person spoke to The Associated Press Tuesday on condition of anonymity because the financial terms of the extension have not been released.

Newton's contract is the largest ever paid by Panthers owner Jerry Richardson since the team started in 1995 & will keep the quarterback under contract through the 2020 season.

The team announced the move on Thursday to end Martin's one-year trial run with the team.

The Niners acquired Martin last March in a deal with Miami. Martin had left the Dolphins in October 2013 after accusing teammate Richie Incognito of bullying. An NFL investigation determined Incognito & two other Dolphins offensive linemen engaged in persistent harassment of Martin.

49ers activate pair of tight ends

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Tight ends Garrett Celek & Asante Cleveland were added to San Francisco's active roster before the 49ers' game Thursday night against the Seattle Seahawks.

Celek was activated from the physically unable to perform list & Cleveland was promoted from the practice squad. San Francisco right tackle Anthony Davis missed his second straight game with a concussion, while Jonathan Martin again started in his place.

For Seattle, which like San Francisco is 7-4, cornerback Jeremy Lane is inactive after being listed on the injury report as questionable with a glute injury. Marcus Burley will start at the nickel spot.
