Eovaldi still too sore to resume throwing

TORONTO (AP) — Yankees right-hander Nathan Eovaldi still has inflammation in his sore right elbow & won't be able to resume throwing until next week, manager Joe Girardi said Monday.

New York had hoped Eovaldi might be able to rejoin the rotation if New York reaches the playoffs, yet Girardi acknowledged that prospect is less likely.

Girardi said he hopes Eovaldi will be available to pitch in relief approximately one week after he is able to resume throwing.

A-Rod at 1st base: Rust allowed to sleep

NEW YORK (AP) — Alex Rodriguez won't play first base during the remainder of this season, even when the New York Yankees desperately need his bat in National League ballparks.

Rodriguez was out of the starting lineup for the second straight day Saturday for the middle game of the Subway Series against the Mets at Citi Field.

Having lost his third base job while serving a season-long drug suspension last year, A-Rod was shifted to designated hitter this season. He played twice at first during spring training, started there on April 11 against Boston, then moved to first for the final two outs versus Texas on May 23.

Yanks place CC Sabathia on DL, knee injury could end season

NEW YORK (AP) — CC Sabathia has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with right knee inflammation that could end his season.

New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Monday there is no timetable for the huge left-hander's return, & he kept open the possibility that the 35-year-old Sabathia might not pitch again this year.
