GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Jimmy Garoppolo, starting in place of suspended Tom Brady, threw for 264 yards & a touchdown, leading the severely depleted New England Patriots to a 23-21 victory over the favored Arizona Cardinals on Sunday night.

Arizona's Chandler Catanzaro missed a 47-yard field goal with 41 seconds to play.

The miss came after Garoppolo, in his first NFL start, directed the Patriots from their own 19 to the Arizona 15 to set up Stephen Gostkowski's 23-yard field goal for what proved to be the winner with 3:44 to play.

Saints' Cooks dominates early, Patriots rally for 26-24 win

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Saints receiver Brandin Cooks looks ready to fulfill the promise he showed as a rookie last season before smashing his hand on a helmet.

Cooks caught all four passes thrown his way for 117 yards, including a 45-yard touchdown from Drew Brees, & the New Orleans Saints raced to a 21-0 lead before the New England Patriots rallied for a 26-24 preseason victory Saturday night

''This offseason was unquestionably a complex offseason just because I worked my tail off to come back & be able to shock the world,'' said Cooks who raced past defensive back Duron Harmon for his touchdown catch on Brees' pinpoint deep pass. ''That's the ultimate plan.''

Brady makes brief show in Patriots' 22-11 loss to Packers

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Tom Brady had better hope his legal defense is better than his football defense.

The suspended Patriots quarterback hung around for one play less than a full quarter in the exhibition opener on Thursday night before giving way to Jimmy Garoppolo & watching as the Green Bay Packers beat the Super Bowl champions 22-11.

A day after appearing before a federal judge hearing the appeal of his ''Deflategate'' punishment, Brady completed one of four passes while playing just two series – a three-and-out & a four-and-out.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — The New England Patriots released veteran quarterback Matt Flynn on Monday & signed Ryan Lindley to replace him as the team's third-stringer.

Flynn signed with the Patriots on June 12, yet was on the non-football injury list. He previously played with Green Bay, Seattle, Oakland & Buffalo.

Lindley was forced into a starting role for Arizona late last season & struggled. A sixth-round draft pick in 2012, he came in after Carson Palmer & Drew Stanton were injured for the Cardinals & went 45 for 93 for 562 yards with two touchdown passes & four interceptions. Lindley was 16 of 28 for 82 yards with one TD & two interceptions in a playoff loss to Carolina.

Patriots circle wagons in camp and focus on football

Patriots circle wagons in camp & focus on football

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — The New England Patriots say they have more to worry approximately during training camp than the status of their star quarterback's lawsuit against the NFL & the team's image around the league.

The defending Super Bowl champions are trying to replace Vince Wilfork on the defensive line & Darrelle Revis & Brandon Browner in the secondary. Linebackers Jerod Mayo & Dont'a Hightower are trying to come back from injuries. New additions such as cornerback/safety Robert McClain are learning the system. Some players – second-year running back James White & defensive lineman Sealver Siliga, for example – are looking for bigger roles, & others are fighting just for a roster spot.

The official Patriots line is that because of those priorities, the team spends little time contemplating the justice of the NFL's punishment for the use of underinflated footballs in the AFC championship game.

The report issued 23 days earlier led to Tom Brady's suspension for the first four games of the coming season. He is appealing it & did not speak to reporters after Friday's workout.
