LA Kings grateful to hit the ice after a rocky offseason

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Kings spent their extra-long summer consumed by troubles that had nothing to do with hockey.

When they finally hit the rinks at their training complex on Friday for the start of a new season, thoughts of gratitude & renewal ran through the building.

''I think guys are excited to obtain on the ice, because it gives us a chance to think approximately things other than (the trouble),'' captain Dustin Brown said. ''There's been a lot of questions & topics approximately this team that you don't normally have, & that's unfortunate.''

LA Kings beat Colorado 3-1, keep pace in playoff chase

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Alec Martinez started a celebration when his shot ricocheted in & out of the Colorado net, only to see the referee shake his head.

So the Los Angeles defenseman collected the puck, dodged the defense & popped it in the net again.

Martinez & the Kings are determined to do whatever it takes to obtain back to the postseason, even if it takes scoring twice on the same play.

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Eager to obtain back on track, the Los Angeles Kings did exactly that Tuesday night against one of their favorite opponents.

Anze Kopitar & Trevor Lewis each had a goal & two assists for the Kings in a 5-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers.

Matt Greene, Jeff Carter & Kyle Clifford moreover scored for the defending Stanley Cup champions, who ended a three-game slide that came on the heels of an eight-game winning streak.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Tyler Toffoli scored in all three periods for his first NHL hat trick, Dwight King & Jordan Nolan broke open a tie game with third-period goals, & the Los Angeles Kings beat the Calgary Flames 5-3 on Thursday night.

Mason Raymond had two goals & David Jones moreover scored for the Flames, who had won their three previous meetings this season with the defending Stanley Cup champions – all by one-goal margins & two in overtime at Staples Center. Jonas Hiller gave up five goals on 40 shots on his 33rd birthday before he was replaced by Karri Ramo with 11:42 remaining & Calgary trailing 5-2.

The Kings, returning from a 2-3 road trip that ended with back-to-back wins over Tampa Bay at Columbus, outshot the Flames 19-4 in the second period & tied the score 2-2 on Toffoli's second goal of the game just 15.2 seconds before intermission. Jeff Carter, who had three assists, earned his 500th NHL point on the play.

Gaudreau nets 3, Giordono gets winner for Flames

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Mark Giordano scored 4:07 into overtime after Johnny Gaudreau had three goals in regulation – including two in a 1:13 span late in the third period – & the Calgary Flames rallied for a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Monday night.

The Flames snapped an eight-game losing streak, dating to Dec. 6, & Calgary earned its first road win in nearly a month.

The Kings were in control before Gaudreau struck. He put a shot under goalie Jonathan Quick's left leg with 2:12 remaining in regulation & then sent another puck in off defenseman Drew Doughty with 59 seconds left for his 10th goal.
