Aug 25 (Reuters) – Graziano Pelle scored a hat-trick as Feyenoord ended their worst ever start to a season by winning their first points of the new Dutch campaign with a 3-1 home victory over NAC Breda on Sunday.

The Rotterdam club had lost their opening three league matches & a Europa League tie in Russia on Thursday, yet bounced back with the flamboyant Italian scoring twice in two minutes in the first half & completing his treble in the 53rd.

Feyenoord started slowly in a tense atmosphere at Rotterdam’s De Kuip stadium yet once Pelle had received his head to a Jordy Clasie free kick to open the scoring, the mood lifted dramatically & the team were rarely troubled on their way to victory.

NEW YORK (AP) — Ichiro Suzuki slashed a single the opposite way with his unique swing for the 4,000th hit of a career split between Japan & the major leagues.

The 39-year-old Suzuki hit a liner off Toronto’s R.A. Dickey that bounced just beyond diving third baseman Brett Lawrie in the first inning Wednesday night for the milestone hit.

”It’s unbelievable, 4,000 hits,” Alfonso Soriano said after hitting a tiebreaking two-run homer that led New York to a 4-2 victory over the Blue Jays. ”To obtain 4,000 hits, you have to be a tremendous hitter.”

Suzuki gets 4,000th hit between MLB & Japan

NEW YORK (AP) — Ichiro Suzuki has singled for his 4,000th career hit between Japan & the major leagues.

The 39-year-old Suzuki slashed a line drive the opposite way to left field off Toronto’s R.A. Dickey in the first inning Wednesday night for the milestone hit.

He has 2,722 hits in a 13-year major league career & amassed 1,278 hits in nine seasons with Orix of Japan’s Pacific League.

NEW YORK (AP) — Robinson Cano hit his 200th homer among four hits & drove in four runs, Chris Stewart hit a go-ahead three-run drive, & the Yankees rallied to hand the Toronto Blue Jays their record 10th straight loss in New York, 8-4 Tuesday in the opener of a split doubleheader.

Cano was a triple shy of the cycle on a perfect day at the plate. He hit a three-run homer off Esmil Rogers in the third to pull New York within a run & added a RBI double in the seventh. Ichiro Suzuki singled & doubled, leaving him one shy of 4,000 combined hits during his careers in Japan & the major leagues.

New York’s Ivan Nova (7-4) was tagged for four runs in the second inning when Toronto batted around in the makeup of a rained-out game on May 19. But he scattered five hits the rest of his outing that ended with one out & Jose Reyes on first in the seventh inning.
