China's win sees Japan women eliminated from Rio soccer

(Reuters) – Japan women's soccer team, the former world champions, have failed to qualify for the Rio Olympics despite still having two matches left to play in the Asian qualifiers.

China eliminated them with their 1-0 win over South Korea on Monday. Their win meant Japan, who have one point, cannot catch up with their Asian rivals on 10 points or Australia on nine points with two matches left against Vietnam & North Korea.

"Nadeshiko" Japan won the 2011 Women's World Cup, finished runner-up at the 2012 Summer Games while moreover reaching the final at last year's World Cup against the United States. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe hailed them as role models for the country.

ADELAIDE, Australia (AP) — Honolulu-based Haru Nomura of Japan won her first LPGA tournament in her 72nd start, shooting a closing 7-under 65 on Sunday to win the Women's Australian Open by three strokes.

Nomura, who was tied for the lead with two others going into the final round at The Grange's West course, finished with a 16-under total of 272.

Top-ranked & defending champion Lydia Ko, who trailed by a stroke after three rounds, finished second after a 67.

ZURICH, Sept 22 (Reuters) – FIFA is to discuss a possible new venue & date for its executive committee meeting in December that was originally planned to be staged in Japan, soccer's governing body said on Tuesday.

The agenda for this week's executive committee meeting in Zurich said that the date & venue for the following meeting would be decided on Friday.

A FIFA spokeswoman confirmed the matter was under discussion & gave no reason for the discussion. The calendar page on FIFA's website continues to list Japan as the venue.

Doha (AFP) – Former champions Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia & Guangzhou Evergrande eased into the AFC Champions League semi-finals despite tough & bad-tempered draws on Wednesday.

While Luiz Felipe Scolari’s Guangzhou Evergrande advanced with a 4-2 aggregate after a 1-1 draw against Japan’s Kashiwa Reysol, Al Hilal made the last four with a 6-3 total after they were held 2-2 by Qatari champions Lekhwiya in Doha.

Lekhwiya faced an uphill battle after their 4-1 away thrashing in the first leg & although they managed to hold their own on Tuesday against the 1991 & 2000 champions, the goal difference just proved too much for them to overcome.

Sept 15 (Reuters) – China's Guangzhou Evergrande booked their place in the semi-finals of the AFC Champions League on Tuesday after holding Japan's Kashiwa Reysol to a 1-1 draw.

Holding a 3-1 advantage from last month's first leg, the four-time Chinese Super League champions sealed a 4-2 aggregate win yet not before some anxious moments.

Kashiwa led 1-0 in the second leg after just 13 minutes at the Tianhe Sport Centre Stadium when Brazilian striker Cristiano scored from a header.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) — Jamie McDonnell successfully defended his WBA bantamweight title Sunday, knocking down Tomoki Kameda in the 12th round en route to a unanimous decision.

The 29-year-old McDonnell improved to 27-2-1 with his second straight victory over Kameda. The English fighter took the title from Kameda in May with a unanimous decision in Hidalgo, Texas.

McDonnell received winning scores of 116-111, 115-112, 117-110, punctuating the victory with a right hand that sent the turning Kameda to the canvas.

Berlin (AFP) – Cologne's impressive start to the season continued on Saturday when they went second in the Bundesliga with a 2-1 comeback win at home to Hamburg.

Wolfsburg moved to the top of the table on Friday with a 3-0 win at home to Schalke without Manchester City-bound Kevin de Bruyne, yet Cologne claimed second after gleaning seven points from their opening three games.
