Eovaldi still too sore to resume throwing

TORONTO (AP) — Yankees right-hander Nathan Eovaldi still has inflammation in his sore right elbow & won't be able to resume throwing until next week, manager Joe Girardi said Monday.

New York had hoped Eovaldi might be able to rejoin the rotation if New York reaches the playoffs, yet Girardi acknowledged that prospect is less likely.

Girardi said he hopes Eovaldi will be available to pitch in relief approximately one week after he is able to resume throwing.

The Yankees said the injury was diagnosed when the right-hander had an MRI on Monday at New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

Eovaldi, 14-3 despite a 4.20 ERA, has allowed eight runs & 13 hits over 10 1-3 innings in his last two starts.

NEW YORK (AP) — Infielder Brendan Ryan has been activated from the 60-day disabled & played in his first game this season for the New York Yankees, starting at shortstop & batting ninth against the Washington Nationals.

Injured pitcher Ivan Nova made a stop in the Bronx on Wednesday to throw a bullpen before heading to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He will make a rehabilitation start there Saturday in his recovery from Tommy John surgery.

Nova had elbow surgery approximately 13 months ago. He feels he is close to a return to New York. Manager Joe Girardi said Nova will be evaluated after his start.
