Sturm beats Barker by TKO in 2nd for IBF belt

STUTTGART, Germany (AP) — Felix Sturm stopped defending champion Darren Barker in the second round to take the Briton's IBF middleweight title Saturday night.

Former WBA champion Sturm twice knocked Barker to the canvas & looked set to complete him off when the towel was thrown in. Referee Mark Nelson called it off 2:09 into the round.

''I hit him well with my swings,'' said Sturm, a German of Bosnian descent. ''We worked on that in training. I moreover worked on my hip rotation & was more stable than before.''

Boxing-Ageless Hopkins retains light heavyweight crown

Oct 27 (Reuters) – American Bernard Hopkins, already the oldest world champion in boxing history, improved on that milestone by retaining the IBF light heavyweight crown with a unanimous decision win over Germany’s Karo Murat in Atlantic City on Saturday.

Hopkins (54-6-2), who turns 49 in January, took control in the second half of the bout against an opponent 18 years his junior.

“The plan was to let the dog follow the bone into the dark alley,” Hopkins said after defending the title he won in March by defeating Tavoris Cloud in another unanimous decision.

MOSCOW, Oct 5 (Reuters) – Ukraine’s Vladimir Klitschko retained his heavyweight world titles with a points victory over Russian challenger Alexander Povetkin in Moscow’s Olimpiyskiy stadium on Saturday.

The 37-year-old Klitschko, whose record improved to 61 wins & three losses, knocked Povetkin, undefeated in his 26 previous fights, down four times to earn a unanimous points victory & hold on to his WBA, IBO, IBF & WBO crowns.

MOSCOW (AP) — Wladimir Klitschko retained his WBA & IBF heavyweight titles Saturday night, unanimously outpointing previously undefeated Alexander Povetkin.

Klitschko knocked down Povetkin three times in the seventh round.

All three judges ruled 119-104 for Klitschko (61-3). Povetkin lost for the first time in 27 fights.

Darren Barker wins IBF middleweight title

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — British middleweight Darren Barker won the IBF championship Saturday night with a split decision over defending champ Daniel Geale of Australia.

Barker (26-1) received winning scores of 116-111 from judge Barbara Perez & 114-113 from Carlos Ortiz. Judge Alan Rubenstein scored it 114-113 for Geale (29-1).

Barker leaped in jubilation when the scores were read at Revel Casino-Hotel then collapsed to the canvas while his handlers celebrated in the ring. He won the belt almost two years after an 11th-round TKO loss to WBC middleweight champ Sergio Martinez at Atlantic City’s Boardwalk Hall.
