MLS wants to be 'guinea pig' for video reviews

(Reuters) – Major League Soccer in North America is fast-tracking plans to use video reviews to aid referee decisions, commissioner Don Garber said on Thursday.

Garber has long been a proponent of using video to ensure crucial calls are correct, & the league recently hosted a visit to New Jersey by officials from the international rule-making body IFAB for the first ever live trials.

The technology was tested during games between local youth teams, with the referee in constant communication with a video assistant referee.

CAPE TOWN, May 22 (Reuters) – Liberia can host international soccer matches again after being declared free of the deadly Ebola virus, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) said on Friday.

CAF, however, said the bans on Guinea & Sierra Leone would remain in place.

Liberia was earlier this month declared Ebola-free by the World Health Organisation (WHO), who wrote to CAF to suggest international football could safely resume.

NIAMEY (Reuters) – Francois Zahoui, who took the Ivory Coast to the African Nations Cup final three years ago, has been appointed as head coach of Niger, the west African country’s football federation said on Wednesday. Former Ivory Coast striker Zahoui takes over one month before the start of the 2017 Nations Cup qualifiers, when Niger host Namibia on June 14. Zahoui was coach when the Ivorians finished runners-up at the 2012 finals despite not losing a game or conceding a goal.

They lost the final to Zambia on a penalty shootout. The 52-year-old Zahoui was recently fired by Guinea’s AS Kaloum after a brief three-month spell.

Fernandez has signed a 20-month contact, with an option for an extension, a statement from the Guinea Football Federation (Feguifoot) said. He will take charge of bids to qualify for the 2017 African Nations Cup in Gabon & the World Cup in Russia in 2018. Fernandez’s last job was as national coach of Israel & his other coaching posts have included two stints at Paris St Germain, where he moreover spent the bulk of his playing days, & Spanish clubs Athletic Bilbao, Espanyol & Real Betis. Fernandez, who has spent the last years as a high profile radio pundit in France, takes over from compatriot Michel Dussuyer, who departed the job despite Guinea reaching the quarter-final of the Nations Cup in Equatorial Guinea in January. Guinea commence qualification for the 2017 Nations Cup in June with a home tie against Swaziland. But the country are still banned from hosting any international football matches because of the Ebola virus outbreak, forced to play their home games at a neutral venue.

Paris (AFP) – Former Paris Saint-Germain & Athletic Bilbao coach Luiz Fernandez announced on Tuesday he will replace fellow Frenchman Michel Dussuyer as manager of Guinea.

"I will be accompanied by (former players) Amara Simba & Kaba Diawara. My goal is to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations 2017.

Conakry (AFP) – Former France international Luis Fernandez is poised to take over as coach of Guinea in place of compatriot Michel Dussuyer, the Guinean Football Federation (FGF) confirmed on Monday.

FGF Secretary General Ibrahima Barry told a press conference that the 55-year-old Fernandez had been in Conakry since Saturday visiting sports venues & holding talks with the country's sport minister.

FGF have been looking for a replacement since Dussuyer quit following Guinea's quarter-final exit from the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.

Guinea disagrees with FIFA over moving African Cup to June

CONAKRY, Guinea (AP) — Guinea sports minister Domani Dore has contradicted FIFA by saying the 2023 African Cup of Nations cannot be moved back to June to accommodate the re-scheduled 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Dore said there was no chance the African championship can be played in the middle of the year because it was monsoon season in the West African host country.

FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke said last week that the Confederation of African Football agreed to postpone its championship, because a 2022 World Cup in November & December was too close to the 2023 African Cup, normally held in January & February.
