Harper belted his 40th homer of the season, Jayson Werth went deep twice & Gio Gonzalez tied his career-high with 12 strikeouts to lead Washington to a 12-2 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday night.

Werth & Harper each had four home runs in the three-game sweep of Philadelphia to assist the Nationals pull within 7 1/2 games of the Mets in the NL East with their fourth straight victory.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Domingo Santana did his part to assist the Milwaukee Brewers forget approximately former teammate Mike Fiers on a night the right-hander threw a no-hitter in Houston.

Santana, a player received in the trade that sent Fiers to the Astros last month, hit a key two-run homer in his debut with his new huge league team as Milwaukee opened its road trip with a 10-3 victory over the Washington Nationals on Friday night.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Max Scherzer pitched a no-hitter & came agonizingly close to a perfect game, hitting a batter with two outs in the ninth inning Saturday in the Washington Nationals' 6-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Scherzer was masterful in retiring the first 26 hitters. He came within one strike of throwing the 22nd perfect game in major league history since 1900.

Pinch-hitter Jose Tabata fouled off three 2-2 pitches before Scherzer clipped him on the elbow with a breaking ball. Tabata dropped his elbow as the pitch approached, & Scherzer immediately grimaced after plunking him.

With the tying run on second & the go-ahead run on first, catcher David Ross picked Washington's Clint Robinson off first base to seal the win. Jake Arrieta pitched six strong innings, & the Cubs made a pair of first-inning runs hold up thanks in part to Ross & first-baseman Anthony Rizzo.

''They saw something. They went with it,'' said Maddon, the Cubs manager. ''It was all them. Spectacular.''

Arrieta (5-4) rebounded from a pair of subpar outings, pitching six innings & giving up a run & six hits. Hector Rondon pitched the ninth for his 10th save.

Washington's Anthony Rendon, who missed 53 games due to injuries, had two hits in his season debut. He was up with runners on first & second & two outs in the ninth when Cubs catcher David Ross picked off Clint Robinson at first to end it.
