SYDNEY, Aug 28 (Reuters) – Mark Schwarzer’s chances of playing in a third World Cup for Australia next year have not been jeopardised by his status as second-choice goalkeeper at Chelsea, Socceroos coach Holger Osieck said on Wednesday.

Osieck named Schwarzer & uncapped Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper Mitchell Langerak in his 22-man squad for next month’s friendly against World Cup hosts Brazil on Wednesday.

Soccer-Valencia close to completing deal for Colombia's Pabon

MADRID, Aug 20 (Reuters) – Valencia have paid the buy-out clause to secure the services of Colombia striker Dorlan Pabon from Monterrey, though the Mexican club are disputing the details of the deal, the Spanish side said on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old forward, who played part of last season on loan with La Liga side Real Betis, will come in to assist fill the gap left by the sale of Roberto Soldado to Tottenham Hotspur.

“Pabon will be a Valencia player as we have deposited his buy-out clause of $10 million,” Valencia president Amadeo Salvo told a news conference.

Soccer-France to host Australia for first time in October

PARIS, Aug 19 (Reuters) – France are to entertain Australia for the first time in an international when they meet in a friendly after this year, the national soccer federation (FFF) said in a statement on Monday.

The fourth encounter between the two teams will take place at the Parc des Princes in Paris on Oct. 11, four days before France’s final World Cup qualifier at home to Finland.

The two nations have not met since they shared a 1-1 draw in a friendly in Melbourne in 2001.

MASON, Ohio (AP) — With her body aching after another loss, Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli decided to retire Wednesday night, saying she could no longer deal with the continuous pain on the court.

Her tearful announcement at the Western & Southern Open came less than two months after she pushed through the pain to win her greatest championship on Wimbledon's chewed-up grass.

''My body was really starting to fall apart & I was able to keep it together, go through the pain – with a lot of pain – throughout this Wimbledon & make it happen,'' the 28-year-old French player said, tears running down her cheeks. ''That was probably the last little bit of something that was left inside me.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga withdraws from US Open

PARIS (AP) — Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has pulled out of the U.S. Open with a knee injury.

The eighth-ranked Frenchman hasn’t played since June 26 when he was forced to retire from his second-round match at Wimbledon against Ernests Gulbis. Tsonga says on his website Thursday that his left knee needs more time to recover & he hopes to be ready for the Moselle Open in Metz, France, in September.

The 28-year-old Tsonga already missed the Rogers Cup in Montreal earlier this month due to the injury.
