Day wins BMW Championship on cruise control, moves to No. 1

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — Jason Day's effortless win Sunday at the BMW Championship confirmed what his rivals have known for several weeks now: The Aussie is the best golfer on the planet.

Day's mostly stress-free final round of 2-under 69 at Conway Farms gave him his fifth win on tour this season, his second in the FedEx Cup playoffs & vaulted him past Jordan Spieth & Rory McIlroy into the No. 1 spot in the world ranking.

The Australian zoomed out to a huge lead by shooting 61 & 63 in the first two rounds & was never seriously challenged after that. His 22-under total tied for the second-lowest on tour this year & was satisfactory for a six-shot victory over rookie Daniel Berger. Scott Piercy finished third, seven strokes back.

Only thing Day misses at BMW Championship is shot at history

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) — A long day for Jason Day ended even better than it began, thanks to an eagle putt at the 18th that extended his lead to five shots at the BMW Championship.

He shot an 8-under 63 to set a 36-hole tournament record at 18 under. Day's closest pursuers were rookie Daniel Berger & Brendon Todd. Todd finished off Friday's round of 63 by holing out an 81-yard wedge shot at No. 18. Berger made his move with four birdies in a five-hole stretch en route to a 30 on the front nine.

Day returned to the course early Friday to complete his rain-delayed first round. With a chance to make history – he needed to hole a 44-yard wedge shot for eagle & a PGA Tour record-tying 59 – Day made par instead, narrowly missing a birdie putt & carding a 61.

Daniel Berger shoots 2, makes 1st albatross at Bay Hill

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Daniel Berger received into the record book at the Arnold Palmer Invitational with the first albatross in Bay Hill history, holing a 4-iron from 237 yards on the par-5 sixth hole Saturday.

Berger's second shot narrowly cleared the rocks that separate the green from the lake. It landed near the fringe & trickled into the cup for a 2.

''I hit a huge iron,'' said Berger, the 21-year-old rookie who lost in a playoff at the Honda Classic at the start of the Florida swing. ''I flushed it. It landed perfect, & I didn't see it go in, yet the way the crowd reacted I figured it was either in or close. When I received up there, it was pretty rad to pick the ball up out of the hole.''
