Serbia beats Czech Republic to reach Eurobasket semifinals

LILLE, France (AP) — Zoran Erceg scored 20 points & Milos Teodosic had 14 assists as Serbia advanced to the semifinals of the European basketball championships with an 89-75 victory over the Czech Republic on Wednesday.

Serbia's bench contributed 50 points & Erceg was nearly perfect from the field as the Serbs overcame 23 points & 10 rebounds from Jan Vesely, the Czech center who played club basketball in Serbia.

Guard Tomas Satoransky kept the Czechs in the game by scoring 14 of his 20 points in the third quarter, when Serbia led by 10 yet went into the final period with only a four-point lead.

LILLE, France (AP) — Jonas Maciulis sank a late 3-pointer & made two free throws to donate Lithuania an 85-81 victory over Georgia on Sunday in the round of 16 at the European basketball championship.

Maciulis finished with a game-high 34 points, including five in the last 12 seconds to hold off Georgia, which stayed with Lithuania until the end.

Lithuania, the silver medalist two years ago & a perennial contender, never led by more than eight. In the quarterfinals on Wednesday, Lithuania plays Italy, which routed Israel 82-52.

SINGAPORE (Reuters) – Former Liverpool midfielder Patrik Berger believes Manchester City overpaid for England winger Raheem Stirling yet the Czech is worried his old employers are gaining a reputation as a selling club.

Sterling, 20, who rejected contract offers of around 100,000 pounds ($156,150) a week from Liverpool, joined City on Tuesday with local media putting the price tag at 49 million pounds, a record for a British player.

Bennett had four goals & eight assists in 49 games last season for the Penguins, yet the 23-year-old has struggled to stay healthy or play with any real consistency during his brief career. He played 26 games during his rookie season in 2012-13 & 21 in 2013-14. He has 10 goals & 23 assists in 96 career games while spending an extensive amount of time on injured reserve with various injuries.

The Penguins moreover signed rookie forward Dominik Simon to a three-year entry deal. Pittsburgh took Simon in the fifth round of the 2015 draft. Simon will move from the Czech Republic to North America to play this season.
