Croatia upsets Spain 72-70 as Saric blocks Gasol's last shot

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Dario Saric blocked Pau Gasol's shot just before time expired, preserving Croatia's 72-70 upset of Spain in an Olympic men's basketball Sunday night.

Croatia scored seven straight points to take the lead down the stretch, then held on when Saric, who was still limping a bit after banging his leg on a pick shortly before the play, rose high to block Gasol's shot under the basket.

Bojan Bogdanovic of the Brooklyn Nets scored 23 points for the Croatians, who received the tiebreaking basket from Krunoslav Simon with approximately 1 1/2 minutes left. Saric, the former lottery pick bound for the Philadelphia 76ers, have five points, seven rebounds & five assists.

Cacic appointed Croatia coach

Zagreb (AFP) – Ante Cacic has been appointed coach of the Croatian national football team with the objective of assuring qualification for Euro 2016 next summer.

Cacic, 61, arrives from top flight club Lokomotiva Zagreb in a deal which runs until after the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

The Croatian Football Federation (HNS) said in a statement on Monday they were "convinced that the squad led by Cacic would qualify for the European Championships in France".

ZAGREB (Reuters) – European soccer body UEFA has upheld its decision to deduct a point from Croatia's Euro 2016 qualifying tally for a racist incident in June.

"UEFA's Appeals Body has upheld the decision to dock Croatia one point for racist behavior at their qualifying Group H game against Italy," UEFA said on Friday. "The appeal by the HNS (Croatian football federation) was rejected."

The Croatians were ordered to play their next two home games in UEFA competition behind closed doors & fined 100,000 euros ($113,690.00).

Croatia loses 1 point in qualifying for swastika incident

NYON, Switzerland (AP) — UEFA on Friday rejected Croatia's appeal against the one-point deduction in its European Championship qualifying group after a swastika was painted on the field before a match against Italy.

UEFA upheld all its original decisions, meaning Croatia must moreover play its next two home qualifiers in an empty stadium, starting against Bulgaria on Oct. 10.

Croatia is moreover barred from playing qualifiers in the city of Split, which hosted the 1-1 draw with Italy on June 12, & the Croatian football federation must pay a fine of 100,000 euros ($110,000).
