U.S. reach Copa America semis with 2-1 win over Ecuador

(Reuters) – The United States survived a late onslaught to beat Ecuador 2-1 & advance to the semi-finals of the Copa America for the first time since 1995 after a pulsating & sometime fractious match in Seattle on Thursday.

Clint Dempsey & Gyasi Zardes scored for the U.S. either side of half time & Michael Arroyo received one back for Ecuador in a game that saw one player from each side sent off & the Ecuador coach banished to the stands.

Ecuador came into the game more after Antonio Valencia & Jermaine Jones were shown red cards in the 51st minute yet the hosts prevailed to set up a semi-final against either Argentina or Venezuela in Houston next Tuesday.

(Reuters) – Eight times champions Brazil were held 0-0 by Ecuador in the glamor game as the second day of the centenary Copa America tournament mustered up only one, albeit spectacular, goal from three matches on Saturday.

Paolo Guerrero's diving header helped put Peru in the driving seat in Group B with a 1-0 win over Haiti in Seattle after Costa Rica & Paraguay had moreover played out a goalless draw in Group A in Orlando.

Neither Brazil nor Ecuador were able to dominate the match in Pasadena & it was the Andean side who might consider themselves unlucky not to have snatched all three points after having a goal chalked off 20 minutes into the second half.

Argentina will not withdraw from Copa America

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — The head of the Argentine Football Association said Tuesday that the national team will play at the Copa America in the United States as planned, dismissing reports that it might withdraw.

AFA President Luis Segura was responding to Argentine media reports that the team might pull out of the 16-team tournament as a protest against the national government, which is trying to assert control over the AFA.

''I'm not going to resign & the national team will not depart from the United States,'' Segura said.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Soccer officials said Thursday they still intend to hold the centennial edition of the Copa America tournament in the United States next year.

A meeting in Mexico's capital on Thursday was attended by various members of CONCACAF – the governing body for North & Central America & the Caribbean – & the South American federation CONMEBOL.

However, the absence from the meeting of representatives from the United States Soccer Federation could put in doubt playing the event in that country.
