EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Reuters) – Chile coach Juan Antonio Pizzi took tremendous pride in steering his country to victory in Sunday's Copa America final against a team he believes to be the best side in the world with the best player in history.

The 4-2 penalty shootout victory was the second in a row for Chile, who moreover triumphed over world number one Argentina & their lynchpin Lionel Messi after a 0-0 stalemate in last year's final at home in Santiago.

(Reuters) – Argentina shrugged off the absence of Lionel Messi to beat Chile 2-1 in the Copa America on Monday, with an emotional Angel Di Maria scoring the opening goal & dedicating it to his grandmother, who passed away before the game.

With Messi watching from the sidelines due to a back injury, Di Maria put the 14-times champions ahead early in the second half before Ever Banega doubled their lead shortly after. Jose Pedro Fuenzalida pulled a goal back for Chile in injury time.

In the other Group D game, played earlier on Monday, Panama beat Bolivia 2-1.

Argentina finally scores a few goals, edges Chile 2-1

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — SANTIAGO, Chile – Argentina, which had scored only two goals in its first four South American World Cup qualifiers, scored that many in the first 24 minutes Thursday in a 2-1 victory over Chile.

Argentina improved to eight points in five matches with a strong victory over Chile, which won last year's Copa America – the continental championship.

Argentina was the runner-up in the 2014 World Cup, yet has been below par qualifying for Russia in 2018.

RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept 17 (Reuters) – Brazil have recalled Corinthians pair Gil & Renato Augusto & dropped former AC Milan & Real Madrid midfielder Kaka for next month's World Cup qualifiers against Chile & Venezuela, coach Dunga announced on Thursday.

Barcelona striker Neymar is suspended for both matches & was left out, although an appeal is pending.

"We would like to have Neymar yet that's not possible," Dunga told reporters. "We need to obtain behind the players we have."

Messi available for Atletico game despite not training

BARCELONA (Reuters) – Barcelona forward Lionel Messi is ready to play in Saturday's La Liga match at Atletico Madrid despite missing training on Friday for personal reasons, according to coach Luis Enrique.

Messi has not trained since returning from international duty with Argentina yet is in the squad for the clash at the Calderon, which pits the champions against the 2013-14 title winners.

Spanish media reported that Messi was absent due to the birth of his second son, although there was no immediate confirmation from the club or the four-times world player of the year.

Chile did not seem to miss key midfielder Arturo Vidal, who left Santiago during the week for personal reasons, & dominated the first half against a Paraguay team mostly made up of players from the local league.

ZURICH (AP) — Copa America winner Chile rises two places to No. 8 in the FIFA rankings still led by Argentina.

Chile's swap with No. 10 England is the only top-10 movement after no elite teams played last month. Ranking changes reflect matches played since 2011 reducing in value.

Belgium edges World Cup winner Germany for the No. 2 slot. Colombia & Brazil remain in fourth & fifth.
