Juve suffer Mandzukic injury blow

Milan (AFP) – Juventus have suffered a blow after Mario Mandzukic was sidelined for up to three weeks on Monday, notably ruling the Croatian out of the Turin giants' Champions League clash at home to Sevilla.

Both Mandzukic & fellow striker Alvaro Morata were forced off towards the end of Juve's 2-0 victory away to Genoa on Sunday, which ended the reigning champions' quest for a first Serie A win of the campaign.

Mandzukic underwent tests on Monday which "revealed a first grade tear in his right thigh muscle. He will be sidelined from competition for 20 days," according to a statement on Juve's website.

De Rossi fires Italy top after Bulgaria win

Milan (AFP) – A first-half penalty from Daniele De Rossi allowed Italy to beat Bulgaria 1-0 in Palermo on Sunday to push them closer to the Euro 2016 finals.

Three days after a patchy 1-0 victory over Malta secured thanks to Graziano Pelle's winner — which came off the Southampton striker's arm — this latest win for Italy took them top of qualifying Group H ahead of Norway.

The Norwegians beat third-placed Croatia 2-0 in Oslo & are two points adrift of Italy with two games left.

Italy beats Bulgaria 1-0 to move top of qualifying group

PALERMO, Sicily (AP) — Italy moved a step closer to qualifying for the 2016 European Championship after beating Bulgaria 1-0 to go top of Group H, while Norway beat Croatia 2-0 to leapfrog into second place on Sunday.

Daniele de Rossi scored with a re-taken penalty in the sixth minute for Italy after Veselin Minev had tripped Antonio Candreva. De Rossi went from hero to villain when he was sent off in the second half, along with Bulgaria forward Iliyan Mitsanski, after both committed fouls in retaliation.

It was a better performance from Italy than in Thursday's dull 1-0 win over Malta although the players were almost made to pay for their profligacy in front of goal. Gianluigi Buffon – making his 150th appearance for his country – was forced into a crucial save in stoppage time.

SOFIA, Sept 3 (Reuters) – Bulgaria goalkeeper Nikolay Mihaylov has been ruled out of the team's Euro 2016 qualifier against Norway on Thursday because of a stomach virus.

The 27-year-old's absence will be a major blow for Bulgaria as keeper Vladislav Stoyanov has moreover been ruled out of the team's qualifiers this week because of a knee injury that will keep him sidelined for at least three weeks.

Bulgaria, who hope to keep alive their chances of reaching the European Championship finals for the first time since 2004, host Norway in Sofia & visit Italy in Palermo in another Group H qualifier on Sunday.

Sept 2 (Reuters) – Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov signed a one-year contract with twice Greek champions PAOK Salonika on Wednesday in a bid to resurrect his career.

The former Manchester United & Tottenham Hotspur forward, who reportedly became the highest earner in the Greek league, was a free agent after he was released by Ligue 1 club Monaco in June.

Berbatov is Bulgaria's all-time leading scorer with 48 goals yet he quit the national team in 2010.

SOFIA, Sept 1 (Reuters) – Bulgaria keeper Vladislav Stoyanov has been ruled out of the team's Euro 2016 qualifiers this week because of a knee injury, the domestic football union (BFU) said.

Coach Ivaylo Petev has called up Blagoy Makendzhiev to replace the injured Ludogorets keeper, who will undergo surgery on Thursday.

SOFIA, June 30 (Reuters) – Bulgaria's most successful club CSKA Sofia will relaunch from the third division following their financial crisis, the domestic football union (BFU) said.

The decision marks a spectacular fall from grace for CSKA, who have won 31 league titles & reached three European semi-finals in happier times between 1967 & 1989.

Last month, cash-strapped CSKA & three other teams were denied licences to compete in next season's Bulgarian professional championship & European competitions.

BELGRADE, June 14 (Reuters) – Partizan Belgrade have signed unsettled Bulgaria striker Valeri Bojinov on a two-year contract, the Serbian champions said on their website (www.partizan.rs) on Sunday.

The 29-year old, who has played for a myriad of European clubs including spells at Juventus & Manchester City, has arrived from Italian second division side Ternana where he scored six goals in 27 appearances last season.

"I want to thank Partizan for giving me the opportunity to play for the best Serbian club," Bojinov told a news conference.
